@motie2, a question for you about the Carey pipes and the effect of their design....does the “venting” end up diluting the smoke with outside air, much as when I do so intentionally on occasion while puffing? I’ve been thinking of trying one and wondered if that was what I might expect.
Well, you got me curious about these pipes. I've heard about them for years, but it just seemed like a gimmick. So I found one I could clean up that was very reasonably priced. Surprise, surprise, it smokes really well, in fact it smokes just about as good as most of my other pipes. I'm not too fond of the stem, but overall a nice smoking experience. Imagine what one on good condition would smoke like?!! Here's some before and after images, which seem to be all out of order for some reason.
Bloodhound61 and others: I notice not much difference in the draw of a properly packed EA Carey, and say my Charatan Yacht/Zulu which cost many times more, except the smoke is cooler and drier. I have eleven pipes, all but three purchased used on eBay, and all but two are EA Careys. I kept two Careys and a Duncan Hill Aerosphere from my first pipe life, thirty some years ago, and a dear friend gifted me the Charatan. I've never paid more than thirty dollars, including shipping for any of the Careys I bought on eBay, and all arrived in good but used condition. Interestingly, all smoke equally well. That's why I like Careys.
Here is a Collector Club Carey #4002 that I bought new in the box. I have not made up my mind whether to keep it or sell it, so I have not smoked it yet. Looking at it tonight reminds me of why I bought it in the first place. Way cool shape, no fills, the grain is not great, but not devoid of character either, and I love a pipe with a chamfered “easy loader” rim. I had another new in the box pipe of the Collector Club series that came with this one as a “bonus”.....I really only wanted the Horn/Zulu, but they were listed together. I had to buy them both. I sold that pipe on EBay a while ago. It had way too many big pink glaring fills in it, and it was a similar shape to my bent “pickaxe” freehand, so I unloaded it.
This appears to be a Carey Magic Inch pipe with adjustable venting, something not found in/on any EA Carey I've ever seen or heard of, and I've been a Carey smoker since 1964. Only two of my (12?) pipes are not Careys and I generally don't smoke them, although they're nice to look at (one a Charatan and one a Duncan Hill Aerosphere.)
I bid on and won the adjustable EA Carey (above) for the opening bid of $9.99. Apparently nobody was at all interested. Someone else got the adjustable poker that was also offered for bid. My pipe should arriive by the end of the week. I had never heard of this model Carey, and when it arrives, I'll post a report. This will be my eleventh Carey.
There are quite a few Carey’s on ebay right now.. I won two in the last few weeks, one was unsmoked,, the other was pretty abused..... Motie2. What do you look for, mostly?
@Kmhartle - I agree with you on all points. I especially agree that the stem quality is my biggest complaint with Carey pipes. If only they’d make them out of high quality vulcanite they would be the perfect pipe.
Just to show you how freakin' stupid I am: I bid on and won the ADJUSTABLE Carey pictured here.
I had never seen or heard of one before, and I've been a Carey smoker since 1968 or thereabouts. The adjustment lever controls the air flow through the three slots above and below the "Magic Inch." That's what makes a Carey pipe unique and why ten out of my thirteen pipes are EA Carey's.
Of course, you can accomplish this by putting your index finger and thumb over the six slots. Why on earth anyone would pay ($9.95 in this case) for an adjustable Carey is (now) beyond me.
I found a 1972 Carey apple, NIB, on Ebay a few years ago. It was complete with all of the original packaging. I was especially pleased because that was the year I graduated from high school, adding a bit of sentimentality. It smokes pretty well. I had one that I bought in the 70s, but I don't know what happened to it, and I picked up a few others on Ebay in recent years. I do like Carey pipes well enough, but I cannot call them my favorites. I do wish that they would make their stems out of a better material than many of them have now.
Motie,,It was the Lion Meer that you referred me to a few posts back,,, I haven’t received it yet, so don’t know how it smokes... Do you use the Carey ‘filters’ on your pipes..?
yes, the little payrate sleeves are required, but they're cheap enough. Some change after each bowl. I keep a sleeve until it turns light brown; five or six bowls. They do not function as filters; more like absorbents.

Looks sorta like @RockyMountainBriar's pipe pic posted August 19, but bent

I'd bid on this if I had won the lottery.......
It’s difficult to see in the picture from the August 19 since it was disassembled, but that pipe of mine is a bent as well.
That is a “FrankenCarey” you have there. Nice to see it smoking again, well done👍🏻

For example, I bought this Carey the last time it was offered (and here it is again). It has a thick walled bowl, sets up, and smokes very cool.

I'm an idiot.
That adjustable E.A. Carey is kinda cool...if you collect odd "system" pipes....like me:)
Congrats! I've never had a Carey meerschaum. How does it smoke? Pressed or block meer?
