Tap tap tap... Check One, Check One Is this thing on?
I may consider Cinco de Mayo as a farcical made-up holiday created by American advertising and tequila distributors but that doesn't stop me from enjoying tequila. Wait! My enjoyment of tequila has absolutely nothing to do with a holiday that isn't widely acknowledged or celebrated in Mexico.
That being said, as it gets warmer - dare I say HOT - in SE Louisiana, I find myself enjoy lighter spirits like tequila and gin. I have found a special liking for a good gin & tonic and that interesting Texas creation caused Ranch Water. Stay away from store bought, pre-made Ranch Water in a can. Instead, buy a good flavored sparkling mineral water (It doesn't have to be Topo-Chico despite what you may hear.) and add a squeeze of lime and the tequila or mezcal of your choice.
I am trying a new tequila I found - Antaño Valencia Orange. It smells like an orange liqueur, is only 35% Agave and 70-proof. Never mind, it's not really a tequila but a liqueur posing as tequila. That being said, add it to some Mandarin or citrus flavored sparkling water and you have a refreshing summer cooler.
I found something new to try from a small Mississippi distillery about 35 miles from me. Interesting blend. Supposedly the whiskey is aged in white American oak for 4 years. They then transfer individual barrels into five different barrels for another year for finishing and then blending and bottling. At 112 Proof it a nice sip but I like it better with a splash of spring water.
Decidedly different for a spiced rum. The “spices” included are not specified, and some do not strike me as among the ones usually perceived…. Of course, taste is in the mouth of the perceiver…
I bought my first bottle of this in February. This is my third bottle and I don't particularly like spiced rums. False River Spiced Rum is "field-to-glass" spirit from a family that has been sugar cane farmers since 1859 with most of their acreage across the river from Baton Rouge. I like the finish on their spiced rum which has bread pudding or baked sweet potatoes loaded with nutmeg, cinnamon and marshmallows notes to my palate. While most spiced rums I've seen range from 60 to 80 proof, False River Spiced Rum is bottled at 88 Proof.
Like many others, I started with spiced rum. These days, I’d sooner spend on a good bottle of Demerara rum. Someone here (if memory serves) mentioned Eldorado 12 year old; that’s a good one.
@Montecristo As it happens, Ihave a bottle of Guyanese Eldorado 12yr in the liquor locker. I agree it’s an excellent rum. I heard about it from “Steve the Barman” on Youtube.
Today I have been accused of being a redneck barbarian because I don't have the "proper" drink ware for a martini or other cocktails. In the past I have been "caught" drinking a martini like beverage out of a 10 oz. Bubba metal cup (cheaper version of a Yeti) In the past I have been caught drinking whiskey out of coffee cup, rum out of a On-the-Rocks glass and mead out of a plastic cup. And we won't even discuss the different vessels I have drank beer out of in the past. (In my younger, pre-married days, I was also found to enjoy licking cognac off the bare chest of a young woman, but that's another story...)
Anyway, when was the law passed that you could only drink certain beverages out of a certain type/style glass.
My drink of choice today was a riff on a martini. I used 2 oz. of Icelandic Vodka with 1 oz. Blackberry Mead with an orange twist for garnish in an old fashioned glass.
@Zouave1864 I had to do the Google on it. It is a toffee that has an open grain created by baking soda, kinda like peanut brittle but lighter…and no peanuts🙂
Knocking back a couple of bottles of Guinness this evening on the front porch. Man, this beer gives be a gut ache, but sometimes it just seems right. At least I don’t have to work tomorrow.
@Zouave1864 I started watching that video the other day but didn't have time to finish it. Basically, the black mead is made by caramelizing the honey before making the mead.
Come to think of it, I turned off the video when ye said he used distilled water. When you distill water you take out all the good characteristics of water. I only use spring water when I make mead. (I also don't use tap water because of the additives in tap water.)
I decided to have a mixed drink with my home made coffee infused Luksusowa potato vodka and some cold, frothed, whole milk with a couple teaspoons of confectioners sugar on ice. To pair, I have a bowl of C&D “Espresso” loaded in my Al Pascia Curvy 02 reverse calabash, tasty😋
@motie2 Whichever one comes up on “The Google” first🙂. I usually just use whole milk (unless I actually have cream or half-n-half, in the fridge for some reason) with a teaspoon or two of confectioners sugar, an egg, a touch of nutmeg and cinnamon, and whatever bourbon, whiskey, or dark rum is within easy reach.😬. No two are ever the same. Yep, eggnog light is a good description👍🏻

Peter Stokkeby English in the cob. Perfect for a hot day
Good to see you Brother. You have been missed.
Kind of ya to say

Ok, what is “sponge candy”?

I thought I was the only one who put alcohol into milk; rum,in my case.
Bourbon flip sounds like eggnog lite? What recipe do you use, if I may inquire?
