The Silmarillion summaries were a project that I undertook beginning in January 2006 as part of a guided reading of The Silmarillion. My goal was to describe the major events and key players of each book or chapter, cutting the extraneous names and material that often proves problematic for new readers. Christopher Tolkien himself admits that The Silmarillion is a challenging work, in the Foreword to The Book of Lost Tales I, yet The Silmarillion is--at least in my opinion--a rich work that is well worth the effort for fans of Tolkien's work.
Following the culmination of the reading, many wrote me to say that they found the summaries helpful in illuminating the key ideas of The Silmarillion. While the summaries were written for and are probably best suited for first-time readers or readers who have found the book challenging, I hope that they will also be a handy reference to veteran Silmarillion fans as an easy means to recall the major events of any particular section of the book.
As time permits, I will continue to add references to this project to further assist first-time readers in making sense of the complexity that is this phenomenal work.
Prepped and put in my small garden today. Every year in mid spring growing up I used to help my dad do the same thing. It always brings on a nostalgic feeling during garden season. My dad was a cigarette man. He was a hard worker and was always on the hyper side. I attribute those qualities for choosing cigarettes for his "quick fix" tendencies. I did have two uncles that smoked pipes. One always smoked a corn cob that looked as if it been thrown into an open fire a couple of times. The other was strictly briar, although his pipe always looked as if it should have been cleaned a few years ago. Anyway, I'm influenced today by my reflections and decided to do some Half and Half in a MM Charlestowne cob... Please excuse my rambling...
Happy (belated) Birthday @KA9FFJ! Apparently it’s been a few days since I visited the site…..and I forgot to hit the “Comment” button on this message yesterday evening.
After 18, I decided to do some Dulce de Leche in a MM Ruby cob. Picked this pipe up while at the Las Vegas pipe show. I've only smoked it twice, so I thought it was past due for a spin...
Smoking some C&D “Strawberry Cavendish” in a BBB Tasman 725 this evening. Packing pipes with my vintage Phil-O-Matic” really works well for me. I think I may, on average, pack too tightly without it, it seems?
@RockyMountainBriar You're not alone brother. I also tend to pack too tightly. I have to1¹ make a deliberate effort to pack more loosely. When I succeed, (and it's now way more often than not) I always wind up with an easier draw and less relights...
I was walking sideways along a downslope on a fairway Wednesday when I heard my left knee pop. It hurt a little, but not bad, and I easily finished the last 3 holes with very little, to no discomfort. When I arrived home, I then mowed my yard. Woke up yesterday and couldn't hardly move my knee without some discomfort to pain! I've been hobbling around like Chester on Gunsmoke ever since. Bought a knee stabilizing brace and it seems to be working fairly well. But obviously no golf today, and probably all next week. I'm hoping after this short layoff, I'll be back to normalcy..🤞🏻 Meanwhile, doing some Frankenblend in one of my Frankenpipes...
I have some C&D “Sunbear Tupelo” from 2023 loaded in my 1964 Dunhill Tanshell on deck for tonight’s festivities. I poured a bit of 1800 Reposado tequila, straight up to imbibe. I also have some soda water, for a chaser🙂
@KA9FFJ; That sounds exactly like what happened to my left knee in late March. Went to a knee specialist and got a steroid shot in both knees(right knee is arthritic). Worked for several weeks, but the physical therapy helped the most. Riding a stationary bike and stretching seemed to work best for my tired old knees. The good news is I've got plenty of separation in both, so no replacements will be needed.
@opipeman The brace and a lot of ice seems to be helping quite a bit. I'd say it hurts half as much now as it did Thursday morning... 🤞🏻 Fortunately I don't need my knee to smoke my pipes.😏
Speaking of knees, about 40 years ago I popped my right knee while attempting to downhill ski. The doctor just went in and cut the broken and frayed ends off of my ACL so it wouldn’t get caught in the joint. This was before they had the expertise to replace them like nowadays. A few years later, I was out riding my dirt bike, (with a custom titanium knee brace on my right knee), I took a spill and popped my left knee…I have no idea how much damage was done because I never went to the doctor. My guess is that I have a torn, or partially torn ligament, in it as well? A change in the weather is a biotch.
I was looking through my tobaccos for something “different” and found my jar of C&D’s Scuderia Series “Cavicchi”. I bought this years ago when I first started this journey. I didn’t really like it at the time, I think I may have smoked one or two bowls. It had a flavor that seemed “off” to me, no idea what I was smoking…weird even. Well, 10+ years later and knowing about the “Tobacco Reviews” site, I now know what I was tasting….the Port wine. It all makes sense now🙂. I loaded the big bowl of one of my Pete Mark Twain’s with the stuff. Yep, still a strange flavor, but at least I know where it’s coming from. There is a bit of the cocoa/chocolate topping here as well, maybe a bit of that cocoa flavor is from the burley? It tastes better now, knowing what I’m tasting👍🏻. P.S. I’m putting this tobacco away for another 5-10 years, it’s still not my “cup-a-tea”, too sharp.
Doing a little lathe work in the garage so I picked up one of my "garage-working pipes" and packed some Frankenblend. It's a reworked Darby with 3 major cracks on the outside of the bowl. Been using it at least once every 2 weeks for 3 years! One of the best smoker's I have. Go figure... 🤔
Woke up this morning to sirens going off followed by a monsoon and high winds. It blew by eventually. We are expecting to get more of the same starting any time now, sooo..., no pipe for the old guy today. It would be to hard to keep it lit. There is also the issue of lightening, which I would just as soon not get hit by about as well as anything. Happy puffing to all me brothers anyway.
I tried to smoke some Sir Walter Raleigh in a reworked Grabow but it smelled strongly of vinegar and nothing like what I remember. Tasted terrible. Probably bold of me to try it. Needless to say it went in the garbage. Bought some solani aged burley flake as a consolation gift.

Responding to your”Sing like Bing” comment….ahh….no🙂
I’m more like Biz Markie when he “sings” the chorus in the song “Just A Friend”.😬
There is a big gap between rambling and reminiscing. Happy that you have those fond memories. Thank you for sharing.

Awesome “accessory”
I love the bullet that states, "(wives and hostesses welcome the smoker who carries a Phil-O-Matic.)"
😁
I love that pipe, maybe some of your best work. Let's not talk about Autumn yet, it is way too early.
