Just read an article titled "Global COVID deaths hit 5 million as pandemic takes staggering toll".
The world has 7.592 billion people, that amounts to a fraction of the population equal to 0.000658 or 0.0658%.
To put that into comparison, the Spanish Flu killed anywhere from 17 million to 50 million people. The population in 1918 was roughly 1.8 billion. So, if you take the middle number of 33.5 million deaths, that would equate to a fraction of the population equal to 0.0186 or 1.86% of the worlds population.
So, in a relative sense over 28 times more people died during the Spanish Flu than have over two full rounds of COVID.
I wonder if the word "staggering" is necessary or simply hyperbole to keep an issue alive for pecuniary reasons and that is why it is in the title of the article. A third alternative would be that news reporters and pundits (at least this one anyway) have degrees in communications precisely because they couldn't pass basic mathematics courses in college.
As for the real Brandon, things haven’t been so great. He drives for a short-staffed, underfunded team owned by his father. And while that win — his first career victory — was huge for him, the team has long struggled for sponsorship and existing partners have not been marketing the driver since the slogan.
All race car teams are "underfunded", and the marketing usually happens on track--e.g., car decals; very few "drivers" are actively promoted by their sponsors.
What a wonderful night! Gov, Lt Gov and Legislative seat wins in Virginia, even a possible win in NJ, and best of all THE ATLANTA BRAVES WON THE WORLD SERIES!!!! CHOP ON!!!!
@vtgrad2003 She is also a Marine and that speaks well for her. (The only ex-Marines I know of are those booted out of the service after courts-martial.)
Right. Sure. You betcha. I didn’t know that. I thought it was a theatrical re-enctment troupe. <giggle> I know nothing. I’m completely oblivious. I can barely dress myself. And once again, it appears that I am not permitted an opinion.
But I appear to be renting space in your head.
And the Lincoln Project has nothing to do with what comes out those MAGA mouths.
From the commentary I've heard by the Lincoln Project members I'd put them 25 to 35 degrees right of center, i.e. right leaning moderates. The MAGA group is following the anti-intellectual former Democrat Trump. @motie2, you're not renting space, you got it free of charge!
Two cogent views that democrats should listen to--unfortunately, most probably won't; most will likely continue to push that all whites are racists, that global warming is actually an issue that can be addressed (remember the ice age? well, it melted, to no fault of man), that the police are mean and evil people, and that we have no authority over our children's education:
@vtgrad2003 The rest of the country takes James Carville more seriously than people in Louisiana. He is just a media darling the left leaning "news" media likes to trot out when they can.
That being said, he makes some very good points about the Democratic party being in danger from the progressive left - or socialists as most of us call them.
Manchin also makes some good points and he seems like a Democrat who wants to reunite the country instead of reigniting it.
Good point...he isn't taken seriously around me either, but as you implied, democrats for the most part, do, yet his points are spot on. As for Manchin, I've always liked the guy myself. He's the old fashioned "moderate democrat", unfortunately, moderate implies he represents the mainstream of the party but these days, he's an outlier his party.
I don't know if there are any truck drivers on this forum (or former truck drivers), but does this sound like a good idea? Semi's are big rigs that can cause a lot of damage...I'm not so sure it is a good idea...
The two Fox links were good. Global warming, climate change or whatever other buckets you call the environmental issues is a scientific matter that's mistakenly become politicized. Catalytic converters cleared the air over many major cities, changes in refrigerants reversed the ozone depletion, let's find other ways to prevent the atmosphere from resembling a cesspool!
