For all you pipe-smoking fishermen out there, my father just published a book based on his lifetime of journaling the fish he caught. I’m pretty proud of him. Plus, about half the pictures in there are ones I took. It’s on Amazon if you’re interested.
I am making a simple leather cover for a Marble’s Bushcrafter Camp Cleaver. I added a ferrocerium fire rod and striker to the lanyard. I have the leather cut, glued, and formed, waiting for it to dry. The next steps are stitching, setting a snap, and a finish of “fixing wax”, my blend of beeswax, carnauba wax and a touch of mineral oil. It works great for keeping vulcanite stems shiny too.
RockyMountainBriar I just purchased a leather tool kit. Made a holster for my Dad. I want to make some pipe/tobacco pouches. My other hobbies though are coins and stamps. ⚓️
I used to play this at least an hour every day, kids put an end to that. Hopefully the boy will want to learn when he's older and I'll pick it back up again.
@Beetleman; That is a beautiful Guitar. I started taking lessons a week before I turned 74, a little late in life. I probably will never get very good, but I love the challenge. I bought this ES-339 used. Maybe playing guitar is like riding a bicycle, you never forget.
Modern guns, I don’t have any interest in old guns. I want what shoots the fastest, the most accurate, and has the most capacity. So basically what I’m saying is I like AR-14’s 😉 and no matter what Joe says I’m not registering any of them. Executive order that 🖕🏻🖕🏻🖕🏻
Well, here is another project started. I found this knife in the road, it had been run over (at least once). It was missing the scales, it was bent and scratched, and the large blade was broken and missing (probably before it’s tire thrashing). I straightened it out and sharpened the two remaining blades, a spey and a sheep’s foot. They are razor shaving sharp, but with a few hard use nicks. I am thinking I will round-over the spey blade to profile it for a bowl scraper. The sheep’s foot will be the plug cutter as is, and I am hoping to fashion a long tamper and possibly a pick to replace the missing blade. The tamper foot will extend out past one end of the knife, and the pick will be separate but parallel to the tamper, or maybe I will use a stainless steel tube and make a combo screw-in tamper/pick? I wonder if I can make some handle scales that have a second purpose, like storage of something that has a handy “pipe aficionado” use? Too small for pipe cleaners though. Maybe a wrap around brass tanked “oil” lighter?
Sadly, the only other hobby I have time for is called "Bathroom Renovation." SWMBO decided it was time to renovate and update our main bathroom. Our house was built in 1977 (we bought it in 1989).
Since the end of January, I have painted the walls and ceiling, removed the old in the wall metal medicine cabinet, patched the hole and installed a wood cabinet and paid the electrician to replace the old light fixture with a new, moisture resistant LED fixture. Now we are waiting for the contractor to replace the bathtub with a shower and put in new flooring and toilet.
As a reward, SWMBO agreed to our purchase of a 2021 Subaru Forester. I kept my pickup for hauling stuff (and since it only has 84K miles on it) I went with the Subaru because it's easier for her to get in and out of and because of the higher mpg rating - 26/33 city/hwy.
Today I am trying my hand at some more simple leather craft. I am going to attempt one of these keychain pipe rest/tobacco mats. I have a Creedo tamper/pipe tool that folds flat and think I will be able to roll it up inside, maybe with some pipe cleaners. I also just remembered that I have a round “pocket”? lighter that might fit as well🤔
I had to get some smaller snaps today to finish the key fob/pipe stand/tobacco mat/pipe tool holder/lighter holder/pipe cleaner holder.....mmm “Key Fob Pipe Kit” 🙂
@Balisong I saw the Claudio Albieri Origami Keychain on SmokingPipes.com and thought, hey, I can make that. I then had the idea about loading it with a few handy things.
I had a request from a fellow pipeman to make a replacement condenser for an old Peterson pipe that was missing it. Some of the older pipes have a different sized condensers and thread pitches so the current replacements that are available won’t fit. I used my Dunmore? Special’s condenser for a guide, it matched the required dimensions. The original from my Dunmore? Special is the one below the finished replacement.
I got some alone time with my lathe today. I recently purchased a new Peterson SPD 2020 and had plans to make a new “nose warmer” stem for it. I like short pipes and the Lovat shape. I thought I would make a short stem for the longer shanked Peterson 106 large billiard so it would look like an army mount Lovat. Here is the process and the results. The stem has a tapered airway, and a deep tenon chamfer. I used some green with black swirl ebonite. The pipe smoked well with the original stem, it should smoke just as well with the short stem, I hope. I wish I had left the fishtail a bit wider (I went a little too far with the belt sander), but too late now🙂 For a comparison I have the Pete “Sports” 2 billiard next to it. The bit is not finished to perfection, but it is just for me and it’s going to get teeth marks anyway, good enough for the girls I date😉

I ran across this website that deals with pocket tobacco tins and thought of you. Enjoy!

That is really cool! Proud you should be!

It sounds like we have a few things in common🙂

Looks good, I love those semi hollow bodies.
Damn, an AR-14 sounds cool.😬
