Etiquette of Pipe Smoking in Public

What do the experts say about what is acceptable in public? Is strong English or Balkin tobacco recommended when in public or are aromatics more appropriate?
I would value your opinions.

My opinion, for what it's worth, the more pleasant smelling to the general public, the better chance of acceptance. Positioning yourself downwind ( if possible) should also be a consideration...

I believe an aromatic or maybe a light aromatic is best. With a caveat, as long as people are not getting a full blast of smoke in the face. I lean more often than not to be by myself when smoking out side. The solitude fits my personality while smoking. Their is always some place to go to, I like to walk so if push comes to shove I'll walk around the parking lot.Of course you will at some point run into people, usually I've gotten compliments.So that's my deal.

I lean towards aromatics when smoking in public, but I think old codger blends like Prince Albert are also acceptable. I try to smoke blends that I think I would've enjoyed smelling before I took up the pipe. Part of the idea behind it is that when I'm smoking a pipe in public, I'm representing all pipe smokers. There will always be the angry people who will say snide comments, so don't worry about them. As long as you're respectful, then I think you're good.

I'm with the consensus opinion here so far. If I'm going to be around others, I'll stick with an aromatic that's passed the Wife Test with high marks. No need having to explain and apologize for Latakia if I don't have to do so. I have enough to apologize for on a regular basis without adding to the mix.

Upon further reflection, I also try to light my pipe "far from the maddening crowd". If you're like most, we generate a lot of smoke during that process. So having the pipe already lit and being able to just sip away would seem to be more acceptable to nonsmokers... in my opinion...

I smoke aros when in public. I feel like it's my civic duty to make pipe smoking as palatable as possible. In the past I've heard other TPL members suggest dressing nicely as well. In other words, don't be the worst dressed slob out there if you're going to sport a pipe!

Well, if smoking is allowed, dont see where it matters. Is what it is,.....cant be as bad as these vape smokers, where it looks like they just blew an engine at a nascar race.!!....jmo

@jeff20 I suppose the intent of the question is less whether it is allowed, but more how to do so without undue offense and (maybe even) put a positive spin on pipe smoking. Because one is allowed to fart loudly at the dinner table doesn't mean you should....at least repetitively.

One think I never do in public, is use a pipe cleaner. They come out yellowish, duty and smelling bad. So, to void "problems", I go to an quiet place and there clean my pipe.

@riobrusa that's one reason I take a cob to smoke in public. Never a gurgle or immediate need to run a pipe cleaner. Plus, I get to make a fashion statement

For some reason I'm suddenly recalling (probably inaccurately) the scene in Mark Twain's novel, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court where "our hero, Sir Boss" describes lighting his pipe and getting up a "good head of steam" while encased in a suit of armor awaiting the beginning of a duel with one of the offended local "noblemen".

I am always respectful to those around me. I either go somewhere alone, join others that are having a cigar or pipe or sometimes it may be better for me not to have my pipe at all and just be with the people I am with. If I want my pipe, I will wait till later and have what I want. No biggie.

Ok, now for my RANT.
I am having a lot of anger issues regarding the general public and media selling this "tool" called 'being offended" just to get what you want.

Someone here mentioned have respect for others and I agree however, respect should go BOTH ways. I refuse to live and participate in this new world of everyone being offended and shouting out their opinions and if I don't agree to their way of thinking I'm wrong then I'm being offensive.

We do not live in a utopian world. We all will never agree on the same things, tastes, policy, education, parenting, cars, way of living, jobs, religion, drinking or tobacco use.

The society today is offended by everything considered once to be the norm or part of history. I will not walk on eggshells in fear of offending anyone.

I am offended by people who are so easily offended!
