@PappyJoe I consider most pipes as functioning art. That being said, and keeping in mind financial limitations, can an art collector have too many paintings? The question of too many pipes usually comes from those who only consder the function of pipes. Once we as pipe smokers start considering the artistic side of pipes, a newly formed appreciation comes into play and suddenly that aspect becomes the dominant influence to "collecting". Sadly, because of that very reason, I must continually fight my PAD tendencies... 😏 But then, the above is just my opinion based on my personal experiences. Tnx for posting the article. It was very interesting...
I am definitely a collector of pipes, but unlike G.L. Pease, I have never fell into the oh! he, she, them, that company is the “in” thing. I have purchased every single one of my pipes because I really like them, sorting by my own prejudices. I have acquired a few pipes I did not care about, but only because they were in a lot with a pipe or pipes that I did want. So, for me, I do not want to sell or trade any of my pipes, except those that were “extra” pipes in a lot batch. My tastes have changes somewhat, and I have thought about selling/trading my Dr. Graybow’s, Weber’s, and various other pipes, just to “thin the herd”. I have pondered this many times, and I still have them all. Silly, silly, bastard I am🤪.
I have a modest collection of 67 pipes. Many of them were acquired at antique malls & flea markets back when I was teaching myself how to restore pipes. I bought cheap because I didn't want to waste money and accidentally destroy a higher quality pipes. After a couple of years, I basically made a "bucket list" of pipes and just kept an eye out for them. That's how I ended up with a couple of Savinellis, an Ascorti and some other "big" named pipes. I even found an affordable Dunhill in one shop.
Most of my higher end pipes, I have either won or I was gifted by the wife.
@motie2 One of my brother’s, I have two, (actual siblings), the one that is a US Recon Marine Gunnery Sergeant (retired), is the “Head Pubah” of the Montana mason’s this year. Well, he’s about half way through a year. I don’t know what his actual title is, I’m not a Mason. “Head Pubah” is easier to remember🙂 I just looked it up….Grand Master is the correct term🙂. I even found a picture of him and his fellow Lodge officers in the process. Which might not seem like a big deal, but he does not let people take his picture, if he can help it. I guess Grand Master of Montana rates high enough for him to allow it🙂.
@motie2 You had a bibliography of on-line articles that contained useful information for pipe smokers. If I remember correctly, it included articles on difference between different tobaccos, how to's on packing a pipe, etc. Does that ring any bells?
@RockyMountainBriar Becoming and being a Grand Master of a state is a really big deal. It requires huge amounts of time and effort, not to mention tons of memorization and dedication. So for no other reasons than the above, I am very impressed. I am a Past Master of a local lodge here in Illinois, and seeing as your brother and I were both Jarheads, tell him I said "Semper Fi" from me next time you see/talk to him...👍🏻
Ah, you refer.to the many articles I posted in the Free Pipe Smoking Library I established as a folder for the enjoyment of our members. I took it all with me when I was made unwelcome. I refrained from participating for almost eleven months until my antagonist left the forum.
The library was massive with over a hundred articles. Do you suggest I just randomly start posting stuff? Frankly, it would be too arduous to setup the whole library again.
@motie2 I'm suggesting that some of the articles would be of use to the newer members of the forum and it would be kind of you to repost some of them. So, maybe you could start a new discussion and post four or five articles at a time?

Damn it, I'm not a collector of pipes. Now I'm getting a headache.

No problem, just curious...
Russ’ left? I’d say no.
Funny, When I first saw it, I thought it was a sewing machine as well. On second look though, I figured out it was a combo printer/copier/fax.

Do you still have that pipe smoker reading list you use to post for the new smokers?
My hard drive abides. Can you be a little more specific? I’m not sure what you mean….i keep everything.
