I'm currently sampling my very first ever pouch of Mixture 79. For some reason (maybe it's not just in the burning taste?) it seems to have an intermittent taste like the mold you find on a loaf of bread (and I don't mean ergot mold). Outside of that, it seems unobjectionable if not outstanding.
@KA9FFJ Be sure you use a corn cob pipe ... because Mixture 79 will ghost anything it touches. I've had a few bowls which were passable - but the majority of the time I hate it. It's like smoking potpourri or one of your Granny's fancy lace handkerchiefs that was once drenched in the type of perfume only elderly women use - then stored in a cedar chest for a decade alongside a book with pressed flowers.
It's a real mind fu*k of a blend to figure out. It seems every time I think about tossing the pouch in the trash I give it one more chance and then it doesn't seem all that bad. So I keep it. Then when I return to it a few days later and have a bowl ... it sucks.
I've tried mixing it with other blends to tone it down, but it ends up overpowering what-ever I mix with it no matter how little of the Mixture 79 I use. .
I'm a glutton for punishment so I'll keep it for those rare occasions when it doesn't gag me. But once that pouch is gone there's no way I'll buy another.
Earlier today I smoked a bowl of Hearth and Home Egg Nog in a small quarter bent Bones Apple pipe. This stuff is one of the best aromatics that I have ever smoked. Yes I know, a BOLD statement. This blend is so smooth, very mild, tastes wonderful and smells great. I have not been very active in over a year due to health issues occupying what seems to be all the time. However, I feel a full fledged tobacco review coming on here. I am very impressed with this blend and hope to order some more in the near future.
I’m goingto order some H&H egg nog on the basis of your comments, above. T’will be a nice change from the Balkan Sasieni, Magnum Opus, and White Knight I have been smoking.
Yeah, I’ve reverted to my 1968-1973 pipe life. Hard.
I can’t remember what Barbados Plantation was like.
I have been remiss
in terms of my desire to do my Pipe Tobacco Reviews, but I must address my new
favorite blend, Hearth and Home Egg Nog.
This is a
fine looking Cavendish and Burley Tobacco mixture in a short shag cut.
As nice as
it looks it has a wonderful aroma in the jar in which it has been stored. Opening
the jar lid a very sweet aroma with notes of Butter, Cream, and a little spice
fill the nostrils. This is not an over the top aroma, but a pleasant aroma reminiscent
of some fine fresh baked goods.
I chose, as
I often do one of my Bones Pipes, my Fat Author and fill the bowl with no
problem whatsoever. The tobacco is semi moist and compresses nicely into the
bowl. Just the aroma of the tobacco as I am filling my pipe lets me know I am
in for another great experience.
I have never
been the “pre light” and then light smokers, I just go for it from the start.
As I apply the burn I get a great mouthful of delicious smoke that once again
makes me know I have a winner in my pipe.
The first
third or so is very tasty with the butter and cream stepping up as the bowl
heats I can detect some spice, and an undistinguished liquor in the background.
No single aroma note drowns out the others at this point.
The second third
throttles back to a slightly sweet deep buttery taste which goes so well with
the Cavendish. I taste what might be the spice, although very mellow and I do
not detect any liquor notes at this point.
The last third
just “comes together” in my opinion. The subtle spice elements show up and join
the buttery and creamy notes. This smoke finishes on an absolute wonderful
taste with all of the components joining in.
This is a
smooth and semisweet blend that totally impresses me, and I find myself
grabbing the jar and neglecting all of the other great blends in my collection.
@motie2 I hope, no I predict that you will at least like it. It is unusual for me, but it is almost the only thing I have been smoking for a couple of weeks now. In fact, I just came in from the front porch, watching the snow fall with the feral kitty we have adopted, after smoking yet another bowl in my Bones Fat Author.
I wanted something sweet and was about to order a tin of Molto Dolce when I read your review of H&H Egg Nog. After a little review research, I ordered 2 oz.
Tried the Cobblestone Virginia Plug yesterday, not really all that impressed. But for the sake of being accurate, I'll dive in again and see if it impresses me today. May have to wait 6 months on this one.
This is for newcomers and anyone else who has not encountered the site:
http://www.TobaccoReviews.com is the deepest and most comprehensive pipe tobacco review website available today. There are more than 90,000 reviews of more than 7,000 individual tobaccos on the website and more are being added every day!
That's a great site! The search page hhas options that can narrow the results to list a fairly narrow result. @motie2, for an English aromatic include Virginia, Oriental/Turkish and Latakia. Exclude all other tobaccos and choose a flavor. I normally select Currently Available and in this case would display the flavors.
@motie2 Great article, but I'm afraid I still couldn't write a review worth diddly squat. Not necessarily for a lack of writing prowess, but mostly because my taste buds only function approximately two-thirds "normal". Too many sinus infections since I was 9, have left me wanting in the full-bodied tasting requirements needed for a complete and detailed analysis of pipe blends. But it sure hasn't stopped me from enjoying the hobby/lifestyle...😁
Well, finally got around to trying the H&H Egg Nog This is the "Christmas/Holiday blend" that I had hoped JOSN, Christmas Spice, Golden Days of Yore, Cringle Flake, or any of the rest of those kind of blends, would be...... It's real nice, as your review indicated. I'll buy it again. I like it with a little Latakia blend (like Balkan Sasieni or White Night) mixed in, say 80/20. Ads that fireplace ambiance. And, no, it tastes very little like egg nog, but for cinnamon, nutmeg, maybe a little clove, and a hint of rum. Thanks, Paul!!!!

Smoke it in a cob; it'll surely ghost a briar.
I concur.
It’s kind of like the raccoons in the Geico? commercial rootin in the garbage cans.
2nd raccoon: That looks gross.
1st raccoon: Come on, you gotta try it.

Thank you for the recommendation!

Taking the mystery out of writing tobacco reviews

The thing that holds me back from reviewing (rather than just raving) is the fact that I can’t type. This leads to a certain tendency towards brevity.
