Here's what I sampled at the New Orleans Pipe Club meeting (a total of 9 pipe smokers in attendance, smoking pipes and drinking beer.)
McClelland's Balkan Blue Strauss's Sleepy Hollow (reminded me of Molto Dolce) McClelland's Rose of Latakia (surprisingly smooth) McClelland's Classic Samsun Briar Fox Newminster's No.23 Blackberry Brandy (You aromatic lover's have got to try this one. It's manufactured by Villiger)
I was given a tin of CAO Moontrance last night. I plan on at least trying it once this morning. It's supposed to be a bourbon, fruit/citrus, honey and vanilla flavored pipe tobacco.
CAO does a flavored line of cigars that I've always felt were more aimed at women and less manly men. Never tried them.
@motie2 The tin I was given is not very moist so I'm not sure how long the tin has been open. It was given to me by another member of our pipe club. The predominant tin note I get is of berries and vanilla. I don't get the bourbon and vanilla. It's not an unpleasant tin note and to me it's not overpowering. I just smoked a bowl in a meerschaum and it wasn't bad. It was just a tad stronger than mild to my palate and was sweet. It didn't bite.
I was sitting outside by myself while smoking it so I have nothing on the aroma itself.
On the scale of one to five, I give it a meh. I'll smoke it but am not entranced by it.
If asked for a recommendation, I would say by Newminster No. 23 Blackberry Brandy instead.
@motie2 I feel the same way about Moontrace as @PappyJoe. It's not a bad tobacco, and it does have nice berry flavor ... but once I've finished the tin I won't be replacing it. I feel the same way about CAO Black. Neither are a bad smoke, but nothing to whole-heartedly recommend. Especially as I have a good idea of what you like in an aromatic.
Just received a tin of Barbados Plantation with my latest order from P&C. Haven't opened it yet, as I'm still working on a tin of London Dock. With all of your hype, this better be good @motie2.
@motie2@ghostsofpompeii STRIKE 2 against Moontrance. Just smoked a second full bowl of it and I can now say I know what I don't like about it. I'm sure most cigar smokers can relate to smoking a less than premium cigar and having an ashy aftertaste in the mouth when the finish it. That's what I got from my second bowl of Moontrance. Wasn't terrible while I was smoking it, but definitely still tasting the ash 10 minutes later.
Had to rinse my mouth with a shot of straight Gin to clear it.

What's odd it that I do indeed represent that remark......

Old Dark Fired in a S. Bang carved by Ulf Noltensmier, weighing in at 39 grams.....
@Corey562, Who carved that bad boy? The flame grain, reminds me of a Mark Balkovec, but I have never seen a Mark Balkovec bamboo.
