Smoking some Spilman Mixture in my Rossi rusticated Vittoria Author today. I have about a half of the tin left so I'm thinking that I will smoke this blend today.
Went shopping in Costa Mesa and they have a liquor store that has a humidor and sells pipes/pipe tobacco. Tins and house blends as well. About to open a new tin...my first G.L. Pease
A beautiful day today on the coast. I had some "light duty" chores to do outside, finally starting the spring yard work. I took the opportunity to smoke a couple of bowls of my tobaccos (imagine that). For those who do not know, I like to mix certain blends together to make a "frankenblend" usually resulting in a pleasant experience. These bowls today were smoked in a Medico Varsity Briar pipe.
Today I mixed two of my very favorites, Lane Vanilla Black Cavendish and Nording Hunters Blend Labrador. Sounds great doesn't it. I however was slightly dissapointed at the fact that together they did not come close to equal the sum of their parts (unlike in mathematics). I was very surprised probably only because I was certain that this could not be less than a hit. Don't get me wrong, it was very good, but not as good as either of the components by themselves. That just blew me away. So, being the adventurer that I am, I tried another bowl. Same observation. In my daily math routine, this refutes the 2+2=4 that is a math constant. I did not expect it to be twice as good, but not being math I still expected 1+.
I am a fan of both these guys. The VBC is to die for in my opinion. The Nording Labrador is a VERY good smoke. What went wrong? The Nording, although it does not bite if treated right, can nip at you if you are not careful. The Lane VBC can't even suggest a nip while smoking it. So these guys, loving the tastes, should get along very well with the VBC influencing the Nording not to nip. I still got a sense of tounge bite that was very slight. The tastes of the two tobaccos however some how did not taste as good as either of the two tobaccos individualy.
So sad to say, my streak has ended at coming up with really good "frankenblends". That's not to say I will give up, or not try this combo again. Tonight after dinner, assuming the springlike conditions prevail (hard to do late afternoon at the shore when the wind becomes "onshore") I will smoke a bowl straight of VBC begging the entire time for forgiveness thinking that I could do any better than perfect with an already perfect tobacco.
@pwkarch Yard work today as well. Took an old refurbished Medico and loaded it with VG Black & Gold. The blend was not anything I'd "write home to Mom about", but it was nice just being outside and that helped to make it worthwhile...
65 and sunny after snow yesterday. Enjoying some mac baron old dark fired in my clay churchwarden. The need to always hold the pipe forces a very contemplative smoke.
Smoked a bowl of Dunhill Early Morning Pipe in my Peterson Kinsale Bulldog this morning before heading off to work. Seems like a perfect day for some Dunhill.
Enjoying some Villiger Jamaican Export in a refurbished Longchamp. Leather cover was rotting so I stripped and refinished. Blend gives a good smoking experience...

Just opened a 2015 tin of McClelland’s Grey Havens. Smoking it in a MM Country Gentleman. Nice Virginia/Burley blend with a touch of Perique.

Tomorrow I will do the same with the Nording.
I am enjoying the Quite Nights tin I bought yesterday and picked this up earlier at the Tobacco Barn.
