How do you light your Pipe?

OK Folks, got to get my rankings up so I am going to post a lot and ask questions while I do it, killing two birds with one stone....no ranking up with more posts....no...forget it, here we go!
 
What do you use to light your pipe?
Does it really matter?
Butane?
Lighter fluid?
Matches? Wood or paper?
Cedar sticks?
What and why people.....remember these questions and answers will help a lot of new comers.
 
On a side note....I shouldn't be this green, I used to smoke pipe all the time and I am an avid Cigar smoker.....guess my mind isn't what it used to be?! 
I always used wood matches or cedar sticks to light Pipes and Butane Torches to light my Cigars.

I use wooden matches. Paper matches are worthless for pipes. What you use is a matter of personal preference. If you go for a lighter, don't use a "torch" cigar lighter - they burn too hot.

I use a Zippo most of the time. Yes, I can taste the fluid sometimes on the initial light, but just for a second, so it doesn't bother me too much. Beside the zippo, I use wooden matches. As someone mentioned in another thread, the zippo flame can sometimes be difficult to draw down into the bowl, and a good old match can reach down into the bowl. I like how cool a match flame burns, too.

For convenience sake usually a bic lighter or other soft flame lighter. Zippo on windy days and matches when I can. I usually do not try to direct the flame at the tobacco but rather draw the flame to the tobacco while taking a draw from the pipe. Torch lighters with proper butane to air mixture burn close to 2000c which is way to hot for any type of contact with tobacco.

I mainly use matches. I keep a lit, unscented candle nearby, and will just stick one in the flame, light it, then light my pipe with it. I also have a zippo with a pipe insert that I'll use, though matches are easier and don't run out of fuel. The zippo was a gift from my best friend, though, so I'll always use it when I can.

Neither makes that much of a difference in the taste of my tobacco. The zippo is just harder to light with the further down the bowl I go.

I use matches sometimes, most of the time I use a soft flame lighter. I have a butane vector pipe lighter that works well and when I misplace that one I just grab a Zippo or a Bic. I never pay attention to whether or not I can taste the fuel, so I'm going to have to say no on the tasting of it, LOL.

I primarily use a pipe lighter, IMCO.  Its normally to windy for me to attempt to use matches and I always burn myself with a BIC for the same reason.  I used to use a Zippo but put it away for a while and now I can't seem to light anything with it.

Yeah no one should ever use a Cigar Lighter AKA Torch to light a pipe, I like Zippo, Wood matches or Cedar sticks to light my pipes.   Surprised no one else has used cedar sticks....

When I first started smoking, way back when you could still smoke on TV, I bought an old Zippo.
Over the years I've tried everything from nimrod lighters, and cedar spills, to hemp wick, and soft flame butane pipe lighters. I keep going back to my trusty Zippo. You simply cannot beat a Zippo.

I have a vertigo pipe lighter, a zippo, matches, or bic lighter.  All depends which is closest to me.

@wolf41035 I have only used a cedar spill once and it was to light a cigar.  Being stuck outside to smoke its normally to windy for even a match to stay lit.  I like the idea of the cedar spill but I noticed no difference in the smoke, even the initial light, so I just stick to a butane pipe lighter normally.  If only I could get my Zippo to work for me.

I love matches. They can't be beat....except by anything above a gentle breeze. ahhaha....I use (when no wind) a butane pipe insert in my zippo.

Some people always have to complain about a thread aka post.   If the tread is dead and buried and not the exact same then what is the harm in starting this one? Where the questions and answers the exact same? Was it active? How many posts and comment can we make without something in them being the same or almost the same?  Everyone wants to complain, instead lets hope something new is said and it helps a new person!  We are supposed to help each other and new smokers not complain because your old thread died and a new one that was ALMOST the same was getting all the good comments.
 
I like seeing all this input, I like knowing someone might learn something new from this post and all the great comments, if you don't like it go comment on the other one so it makes it back to the top!!

Had a bad day today and this evening had a lighter that was flaming out the side, it was a torch at lounge for cigars, I think it had a line coming off.  Emptied it and put it away for owner to look at.

I use wooden matches and Zippo. Getting ready to buy a Comoy's pipe lighter. We'll see how that does.

Forgot about a refillable butane lighter I had given to me, not bad for pipe but I would rather use Zippo or stick matches!

Only ever used a a bic or bic style. I'd like to get a Zippo with a butane insert though.

@tomatobodhi Everyone has a personal preference, don't ever let anyone stray you off your preference unless they are just trying to help, if they are trying to help try what they suggest and if you don't like it then go back to what you like, no harm no foul.  LOL
It is the pushy ones you learn to ignore.

Wooden matches normally for the initial light, then I usually switch to my butane pipe lighter for any relights.

Pipe-Butane soft flame pipe lighter. cigar-butane torch. Less chance of burning your thumb with a "pipe" lighter
