@vtgrad2003 I saw that you had burley flake #2 on your list and wanted to suggest burley flake #5 and C&D lunchtime blues; as va-burs go they are quite good.
So on black Friday I made my first order to Wilke, bought 8 blends, 7 were English and 1 was an aromatic called Rum Cake.
My wife brought in the mail today while I was blowing leaves and came out and said those wilke people don't package very well.
I of course thought oh shit the package opened but as it turned out the rum cake is so potent that it its like an industrial air freshener, not sure I will like it, very wet, spreed it out to dry so now the house is overwhelmed.
@mapletop I hit that sale as well mainly to do a comparison with 14 year old stuff I have with #192 and #524. Haven't compared #192 yet. Here was my notes on #524
Wilke 524 that is 14 years old. Jar note still has that lakatia smell and something else. Perhaps a plum or dark fruit aroma.
First light, Latakia reminiscing of 90s Dunhill blends. Definitely stronger than London Mixture but not quite as strong as Nightcap.
It has a nice mouth feel. There is a brown sugar note in the background. Last half of the bowl, dare I say, reminded me of a Dr. Pepper without the fizz.
Fresh stuff time!

First light and this straight up reminds me of my first love,. Dunhill London Mixture. All the memories are flooding back from late 90s.
Mid-bowl the oriental dominates with spiciness. I could be wrong here, it is entirely possible that it is the Cyprian. Now I am curious if the 14 year old is with Syrian Latakia and this with Cyprian? Anyone remember when the warehouse fire was that destroyed the US supply? Warehouse was in Greenville, SC I think.
Either way, the aged stuff has rounded the rough edges on the blend. That is not to say the fresh stuff is not enjoyable. On the contrary,. Both are excellent!
A note of caution with regard to ordering from Wilke; the Rum Cake was so strong that plastic bags might as well be screens, all the other blends in the shipment are now English aromatics.

@mapletop I ordered some bulk Sutliff “California Dream” from smokingpipes a few years ago, it was the only tobacco in the order. It had a very, very strong stench, yes I said stench, of Latakia. Did I mention, I hate Latakia😖. Anyway, 2-3-4? years later and that batch is still full on un-smokeable Latakia stench nastiness for me, how guys smoke that stuff is a mystery to me? At first I though that it may have been stored next to some of that filthy Latakia and that it might “come around” after several years and lose the disgustingness. Nope! I wonder now if maybe when they were portioning out bulk tobaccos for orders some jamoke spilled some and mixed and combined the tobaccos? I order another 4oz. of the Sutliff “California Dream” right away, it did not have a hint of Latakia and was the tobacco blend I thought it was suppose to be. I really wanted to stick that mason jar full of the “nasty tobaccy” in somebody’s? at SPC’s “where the sun don’t shine”. It would not have been worth the effort of a road trip to South Carolina I guess🤔
So Wilke said they normally double bag the Rum cake blend, which in my opinion would do nothing to control that intense of an aroma; any way they are sending a replacement order less the aromatic so I can't complain about the customer service
FYI I tried the Rum cake blend this evening, after drying it overnight, I can not recommend it, there is a sort of soapy after taste. But who knows may be it better when its wet
As cheap pouch tobacco goes, Erin Go Braugh and C'est La Vie are pretty decent. I ran across some new blends from both so I added them to my monthly buy...
Recently, I needed to purchase some tobacco to someone. I also included a pouch of Half & Half. After 10 years of smoking a pipe, I have never tried it. I really enjoy it. My Nic tolerance is going down.
Each time I swear I'm not going to buy anymore tobacco until I make a considerable dent in my tobacco cellar I end up making another purchase. Once I realized I was completely out of both Boswell Christmas Cookie and Boswell Cupcake I ended up ordering two four ounce tins of both. The order arrived within three days of ordering the tobacco. I guess I can't get the thought of a 1600% increase in tobacco tax looming on the horizon, so I occasionally go against my better judgement and make an additional purchase even though I doubt I'll ever run out of tobacco.
@ghostsofpompeii For some of us, it's like an obsession, I know I have more tobacco than I'm likely to be able to smoke in my lifetime, but, I keep buying more.
I would note that the FDA / democrats plans for tobacco are a factor but..........
I need an intervention, that or a tobacco conservatorship. I wonder if there a 12 step program for pipe smokers / collectors?

As others have said, I have way more tobacco than I will ever smoke. My problem is, like some others, I “collect” things. I don’t have large amounts (stockpiles) of any one tobacco, but I have a whole lot of individual blends, I like to try different things🙂. I usually buy ~100grams/4oz. of each type. I use to buy half that, but there are a few tobaccos I really enjoyed but disappeared before I realized it. Hello, where is my “Beacon”? I still have some, but it is slowly disappearing.
It’s kind of like the Original Wrigley’s Spearmint Gum (the kind without the stinking artificial sweetener) I bought years ago and vacuum sealed when I found out they put artificial sweeteners into the formula back in 2005. I still have some, but it is slowly disappearing. It will be a sad, sad day when I run out. I really, really, really, really HATE artificial sweeteners. I once chewed about 5 sticks a day (a pack a day gum habit🙂). It made me happy, now it’s maybe that much every few months, me not happy🙁. The closest replacement is Freshen-Up spearmint, but I’m not sure it’s made anymore either. It’s been a long time since I have seen any Freshen-Up, and for all I know, it may contain artificial sweeteners now too. I wish Wrigley’s would have left my gum alone…they already had the stinking “Extra”. I actually contacted Wrigley’s back in ‘05’ to ask “what the hell are you thinking changing a ~100 year old formula?”…they said they added the aseuflame K (sp?) artificial sweetener (the same as in “Extra”) to make the “flavor” last longer….bastards! It still has regular sugar too, WTH? I had at least twice this much Original when I bought every stick I could find at the larger grocery stores back in 2005 when I found out they f’d it up.
It smells heavenly, I had to have one….dang this is good😋. It’s been awhile. Yep, still awesome after 16 years, yes, I said 16, it actually been a few months longer.
Speaking for myself, it's the VARIETY I'm after that lends itself to way more blends than I'll probably ever use. But when I go to load up, I sometimes feel like a kid in a candy store...👅
My problem is, I don’t have a very big house, so storage is a problem. I have to dig to the back of cupboards and shelves through layers of jars. I have to remember what I have and where it’s at……right😳.
@RockyMountainBriar As an avid collector of a variety of subjects I feel your pain. When I became aware of the monthly DVD and Blu-Ray sales at the Dollar Tree my already massive physical media collection has all but taken over any empty space in my house, that isn't already cluttered with pipe tobacco. I simply can't pass up a dollar deal for Blu-Rays for a buck ... especially on movies I may have purchased on VHS or DVD for $25.00 in the past. Now each month around the 20th I'll scour the local Dollar Trees in my area to see if the new batch of DVDs and Blu-Rays arrived.
It was a bit of a shock to the system this month when I discovered the price of most items in Dollar Tree went up $1.25 due to inflation. That means I now can only get four movies for five bucks.
I have some Salty Dogs plug on it’s way along with a Stanwell poker And on a whim I bought a Savinelli poker. I as well have more tobacco than I will ever smoke in a lifetime. Thank god my brother in law shares the same passion for pipes so we smoke quite often!
