@RockyMountainBriar Several members of what used to be the New Orleans Pipe Club had olive wood pipes. One of them noted did detect an olive note when breaking in his pipes but after the cake started building up, the olive notes went away.
That being said, I have no interest in an olive wood pipe. For some reason I haven't seen one that appeals to me. I have considered buying a morta though.
@PappyJoe I was pretty sure that the olive oil taste would peek through. I wasn’t sure how long it would take to subside or how strong it might be. I’m not a big fan of the taste of olive oil anyway. When I was turning the olive wood pen blanks on the lathe I got a strong aroma of olive oil, and that was from kiln dried wood. I sort-of like some olive wood pipes, but a good piece of briar is better looking. I do not know anyone with a morta pipe, but the article that @motie2 posted about it’s attributes sounded promising.
A rich and satisfying cut cake comprising sweet, ripe Virginias, nutty Burleys, unflavored toasted Black Cavendish, and a generous measure of Perique. A splash of dark rum ties it all together, and adds a bit more sweetness. As you enjoy this slow, clean-burning flake, you'll find hints of cocoa, black walnuts, and dried fruits enhancing complex, natural tobacco goodness. Full on the palate, with a delightful aroma. Enjoy smooth sailing with Windjammer.
The rich flavor and aroma that is apple pie fresh from the oven. This pipe tobacco is blended with the finest exotic Green River tobacco leaf. Slightly fuller bodied than Classic Black Aromatic. https://www.eacarey.com/applepie.html
A word about morta pipes...be careful about who you get it from and how it's made. I had a Rick Black morta that cracked after about 3 bowls. Split right up the middle. I consider the guru on morta to be Davorin Denovic. I sent him an email about the pipe and he said that there was a lot of morta on the market that really wasn't suitable for pipe making. Just my two cents worth...
@motie2 On the WindyCityCigars site, there's a video at the very bottom where he does a review of the tobaccos listed. I couldn't help it, upon seeing the size of the marker he was using along with how he was holding it, I had to wonder how many times he has tried to take a draw off of it forgetting it wasn't a cigar...

Here is a retail source I had not been familiar with. (-10pts ending sentence with preposition) https://www.lilbrown.com/c-202-pipe-tobacco.aspx Interestingly, they do not list all the tobaccos they offer; for example, they carry many Sutliff blends, but Sutliff is not shown on the URL, above. I found Sutliff blends by using the page’s search box.
@motie2 I did some more digging. On the sites I could find Gambler and Tin Star, the pages have the "Customer's also bought" section featuring cigarette tubes. That sort of backs up my theory that some of the bulk blends are really just cigarette tobacco repackaged to avoid taxes and regulations.
In fact, two of the offerings I could find on tobaccoreviews.com are Buoy and Golden Harvest. Both say "Notes: This is RYO tobacco, though it can of course be smoked in a pipe."
Both my parents were heavy smokers. Unfiltered Camels and Chesterfields. After having a lung removed, my father, of blessed memory, switched to cigars.
Cigarettes reek. They foul room air and make your clothes stink. Before NJ banned smoking in bars and restaurants, I used to fantacize about carrying a spray bottle of cat urine.

I have been eyeing those “Norse Dogs” for awhile. Maybe it’s time for an Olive Wood or Morta pipe, I have neither🤔
No choice between those two. Go MORTA.

Some of those look like repackaged roll your own tobacco and aren’t to be found on tobaccoreview.com.
