I have. It's a pain and all, but it delivers the best charring puffs I've ever had, regardless of blend.
It's a lock for obsessive fussbudgets.
Most of the time I go with a butane, either a Linse or a nice leather clad lighter I received from LANE. I can't smoke in the house (saith SWMBO) and I won't take my Corona Old Boy (the one with a pipe shape chart on the sides) out of doors for fear of losing it, so I never get to use it.
Yes, occasionally. I have a tamper I made that I wrap with beeswax soaked hemp. It actually works really well because you can roll out a few inches and actually get down into the bowl for any relights if needed. It is a pain though, you still need something to light the wick. It works great in combination with a Zippo if you really hate the slight fuel flavor you can get sometimes. The slight, if any imparted flavor from a Zippo does not really bother me, but the wick does alleviate it. Sometimes I get a bit of honey aroma from the beeswax, it’s better than Zippo fuel🙂
Been using this leather jacketed Brog butane. It delivers a nice soft flame and, because of the built in pipe tool, has proven to be very handy... Ebay...
I have been wanting a lift-arm lighter and found this little guy. It actually works. It does not hold much fuel (duh) and what fuel it does hold evaporates in a day or two, which I expected. Not really useful. It’s still kinda cool though.
@motie2 To match my keychain.....or watchchain fob
Interesting? Note: I did have to find a partially used flint to install in that little guy before I could get it so spark. With a full/new flint there was just too much pressure on the striker wheel.
I love my Zippo Pipe Lighter but it does present a problem when smoking something like a freehand with an uneven plateau a meteor crater. In a case like that I need a Bic or matches.
When I was a kid, I remember my dad actually using one of those gasoline blowtorches to get things done. That lighter does a pretty good job of approximating the look.
Oh yah! I have an old alcohol torch I might have to get out for the cigar guys at the next BS session. Not that practical though, still have to light it with something. Might be ok with a bug repellent lamp nearby though.
@motie2 I've priced those Masonic lighters, and they're not cheap! I have yet to find one as a pipe lighter. Not saying they don't make one, I just, as of yet, have never found one...
@KA9FFJ Get a Z-Plus butane insert for a Zippo, about $10 on EBay. I have one, and also the single and new double jet inserts. They work very well and are reliable too. No need to worry about filling them every few days if you don’t use them often either. No chemical burns on your leg from a leaking Zippo if you happen to overfill one😖. By the way, the Thunderbird inserts are crap....at least mine was.

I've had mine for about 18 months and the mechanism is starting to wear out. Still, it's been worth the money.
