By the way, for anyone one historically minded concerning pipes and other related subjects, you might find it interesting to Google JOST St. Louis. A long gone BM, was located in downtown St. Louis, steeped in a lot of history. I could go on and on, but if you're interested enough, you'll look it up...😊
The first thing I did was to wind up using 9 bristle pipe cleaners, and 6 regular pipe cleaners. Next, I cleaned the stummel to see what I had to work with...
@motie2 Only after the airway is pretty clear. The don't look it, but the handles on those brushes are easily bent and can be tough to get through. Once the air passage is respectably open, brushes can be used. But IMHO, bristle brushes can't take the place of METAL bristled pipe cleaners. But then again, I'm an old man from the old school, so what do I know?...🙄
The thin brushes I boughton Amazon have overly stiff wire handles. Too stiff for some curvy places. But greatfor pushing through guck. I guess another YMMV situation.
Nice grain, so after stripping, I decided to 2- tone stain it to help make the grain pop a little. Anyway, after finishing, including the stem, here's the final...

Pit fills are still there, but now not as easily noticeable...

Before:
You really must get one of those long pipecleaning brushes I’ve mentioned elsewhere.

Here's a few of my brushes...
One of those brushes could have stood in for the, “.... 9 bristle pipe cleaners, and 6 regular pipe cleaners.” No?

That pipe has some nice sweeping flame grain. Nice, very nice, one of my favorite shapes.
