Hello, I’ve been enjoying a pipe on and off since I was 18 (30s now),my mom of all people bought me a “starter kit”. Great little ensemble of pouch, Czech tool, cleaners, a Dr.Plumb bent apple(I think that’s the correct term), and of course a tin of something I vaguely recall as a loose cut vanilla aromatic. That pipe is still in my rotation though most frequently I prefer my simple straight corncob. I still like anything vanilla though I’m a believer that variety is the spice of life and only wish I had more resources to add to my meager “cellar”. Quit drinking for a year since April and it’s amazing how much time becomes available when drinking isn’t a major part of your day to day. It’s been very self illuminating and has allowed me to reprioritize some goals and hobbies (ie pipe). Nothing against alcohol, I found I’d gotten in the habit of drowning some sorrows instead of dealing with life head on. Back on track living healthier overall, lost 35lbs working out etc. The pipe is essentially my remaining vice as some might term it. I find the history of tobacco and pipe smoking fascinating. I’m also interested in making pipes, especially unique ones in shape or type of wood.(duh who here isn’t interested in unique pipes?) I live in the Seattle, wa area, originally from South Texas. Spend the majority of my time taking can of my son and wife. Occasionally occupied with practicing acupuncture. Love to cook and read and hike and fish and hunt....life etc.
I’ve really enjoyed TPL. I don’t usually participate in forums or really the internet that much at all, TPL comes across really open and friendly, like that one old uncle that always had a dirty limerick ready to go if you just ask. I also like weird analogies it seems.
open to any questions or comments. I’m not easily (or ever) offended.
Consensus around here is that the top vanilla blends are Sutliff Vanilla Custard and Lane BCA (both bulk), Sutliff Panna Cotta (tin), along with Lane Vanilla Black Cavendish (bulk).
Welcome aboard my friend. This Pipe Life is THE best forum online....believe me. There are tons lof guys here who have smoked for years, have great experience, and are willing to share with anyone. The only stipulation is for you to share experiences, techniques, favorites, likes and dislikes, and opinions. I have yet to see anyone being outright nasty to anyone else. This is a diverse collection of people with various life experiences that are sometimes discussed but of course the absolute issue is pipes, tobacco, and sometimes a cigar or two will pop up. So enjoy yourself here and please participate.
Welcome @Texsqatch13 , glad to have you with us! As others have said, this is a welcoming and friendly place. Post often, and share your thoughts and stories with us!
@Texsqatch13 - You never know what you have in common with people until you introduce yourself. I'm originally from Southeast Texas and spent my first six years in the Coast Guard in the Seattle area (except for 9 months at a small station on the Washington coast). My wife is from Eastern Washington and she still has family living near Seattle. Seattle used to be such a nice place to live back in the 1970s. I also read, cook and fish. For 10 years I was the managing editor of a monthly hunting and fishing magazine. Now I'm semi retired.
Welcome to the forum. If you have any questions ask them and @motie2 will point you in the right direction for the answer. He maintains an extensive library of documents about pipe smoking and pipe tobacco.
new here, just looking around. I have smoked pipes on and off for a while, but I am primarily a cigar smoker. I am really into pipes at the moment though i really learning to taste to the tobacco. i mostly smoke Corn Cobs due to prices really. Trying to get my hand on some good pipes and find a tobacco that is my go-to. So far Capstan blue is my go-to. love straight Virginia, but I also love that parique...and burly... so I go back and forth.
@cowboychris Welcome, welcome, welcome, as John Oliver would say. We are glad you have decided to join us. We look forward to your participation and contributions to our discussions.
