America's sickcare system is about as corrupt as the government that employs them and the insurance companies. This is no way to live and WILL get worse.
That’s the work environment these days. Hell, it’s the social environment these days. No one talks to each other anymore. At my new workplace, I was talking with a co-worker from a different area (one room over) about whatever? awhile back. We moved from one room to another continuing our conversation and a co-worker, that I work with directly day to day overheard us talking. They started up a conversation about their military service, one a US Navy Submariner, the other a US Air Force M.P. After a short conversation between the two (maybe 5 minutes) we all went back to what we were doing. After the first co-worker left, the second, that I work with day to day, whom has been with the company ~5 years told me that it was the most he had ever talked to the first co-worker in that ~5 years time. He had no idea he/they were fellow US service members. I will point out, there are only about 30 people in the building, and the building is not that big. Crazy. When I first started there were/are three other people I work with in the same room…..they didn’t really talk to each other unless absolutely necessary. And it’s s not like they hate each other, or our work needs to be done in complete silence. Freaking weird. They talk more now, at least to me anyway.
@RockyMountainBriar That's crazy. It's also true. People are living in fear and do not want to risk offending anyone for the big mess it will create. Sad days. Sad.
I've spoken of the shining city all my political life, but I don't know if I ever quite communicated what I saw when I said it. But in my mind it was a tall, proud city built on rocks stronger than oceans, wind-swept, God-blessed, and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace; a city with free ports that hummed with commerce and creativity. And if there had to be city walls, the walls had doors and the doors were open to anyone with the will and the heart to get here. That's how I saw it, and see it still.
On this day, we honor the dignity of labor and the value of work in all its forms. We give thanks for the hands that build, create, serve, and sustain our communities. May those who toil find meaning and fulfillment in their work, and may they always be treated with fairness, respect, and dignity.
When we assume everyone is bought and paid for, we don’t bother to explore what people are really like. Because when someone generally assumes that everyone they don’t agree with is wrong, they stop paying attention to plain evidence about who can and can’t be trusted. They learn less about people, and can’t adapt to changes or new situations. Sure gullible people blindly trust others, but cynics blindly mistrust anyone who doesn’t share the same views..
@opipeman There were four pipe smokers who attended the meeting for the first time. Three of them will hopefully be regular attendees. The fourth lives about 60 miles away so I don't know how often he will attend. I've been in contact with a couple of guys trying to start a pipe club in Baton Rouge which is closer to him.
We also had two past members who haven't been in town much for the past year.
The big "draw" was a representative from Laudisi who brought a table full of pipes and lighters that were sold at a small discount. The Savinelli's included the 2024 St. Nicholas and two other lines I can't remember. The other half of the table were Petersons.
My wife would occasionally buy me a new pipe for our anniversary, Christmas, my Birthday or Father's Day. I decided to buy a Peterson Rusticated 303 Fishtail System Pipe as an anniversary gift. I also did my Christmas shopping early and bought a Savinelli St. Nicholas 673, 2024 edition. The St. Nicholas will be wrapped and placed under the tree as my Christmas present.
Wreaths Across American is a worthwhile event honoring those interred in veteran's cemetery across the U.S.
The Southeast Louisiana Veterans Cemetery currently has 1,432 wreaths sponsored and needs 1,868 to meet it. The only way to guarantee a wreath is placed is to sponsor one for a veteran or spouse.
This isn't just for the SE Louisiana Veterans Cemetery in Slidell, LA. It is a program for all veteran's cemeteries. Please consider sponsoring one or more wreath's. It is only $17.00 per wreath and you can designate which veteran's cemetery receives the wreath you sponsor.
Additionally, you can designate a specific grave if you have a loved one interred in a veteran's cemetery. I have sponsored one for Sharon Mann Gibson and four additional wreaths for the SE Louisiana Veterans Cemetery.
From what I have been told, there is a ceremony that will be held where volunteers will place the wreath and then read off the name of the person in the grave.
