Time to vent & whine with a reason to celebrate also tossed in to the month of May....
I will start with the celebration first. Our oldest son (47 years old) graduated from LSU with his Masters in Business Administration on May 17th. He is a culinary school graduate who worked his way up from "Chef" to Executive Chef at universities to Director of Food Services at a small university. (He actually works for a food services company that are contracted by colleges and universities.) During that journey, he earned a Bachelor of Science in Entrepreneurship while working full time and then continued his education to earn his Masters.
We had to watch the graduation ceremony on youtube because the MANY ceremonies at LSU started at 8:00 am. Why so early? Starting yesterday, LSU held graduation ceremonies for over 8,000 students yesterday in 12 different schools of study. That included PHDs, Masters and Bachelors of Science and Arts.
Venting and Whining.... The family graduation party was held at Tickfaw State Park about 35 miles from Baton Rouge. We rented a cabin for Thursday and Friday night. The party would be held at one of the picnic pavilion. We got to our cabin well before the rain started. Then the wind started. Then the power went out at 10:30 pm on Thursday and didn't come back on until 8:10 am. We were still good. The winds reached approximately 60 mph and knocked two or three small trees across park roads, plus a lot of limbs. (Kudos to the park maintenance for have the roads cleared and looking like nothing happened before 10 am.
Then the power went out again at 2:45 pm. It was in the mid-80s and humid. The party continue in the pavilion with most of the cooking done on the park grills. The electric company told the park that the power should be back on before 5:00 pm. They lied. As the party was winding down, I made the executive decision that the wife and I was not going to wait any longer for the power to come back on so we packed up and left before 8:00 pm. The park ranger gave me an email address to request a refund because of the power problem.
What else could have gone wrong in May? A tornado or two came through our small town in the early days of the month. Two trees in the backyard split but didn't fall on the house which was good. The bad news was since they didn't hit the house, I had to pay for their removal. I had the roof inspected just in case. Three companies went on the roof and provided estimates and all three said they didn't find a structural damage but my 18 year old roofing shingles needed replacement. Two of the estimates were over 20K. The third company said they would do it for 13K. I checked them out and they were indeed reputable, licensed, insured and had been in business for over 20 years. They installed Class 4 Impact Resistant shingles which earns me a whopping $300 a year reduction in my homeowners insurance.
As they were completing the install of the new roof on May 8th, our 23-year old Lennox air-conditioning and heating system decided it was time to die. It would have cost over $1,000 to fix but since it was 23-years old and filled with the R-22 coolant which has been banned, I had to get it replaced.
The installation won't happen until May 20. Fortunately the AC company we chose had a good deal for financing and also loaned us four window units so we could continue living in the house. Since they were replacing the outdoor and indoor unit, I decided to have the 50-year old ductwork in the attic replaced at the same time. It needed to be done because it's old and had too many air leaks.
An older veteran in our neighborhood passed away and his house went up for sale this week. This was tossed in to the trash can out front by his family. Im pretty speechless.
Ok, I am watching “They Were Expendable”…for about the 15th time…..I love the operations of WWII PT boats. I like fast🙂. I decided to look up (again) their specs, mainly their propulsion, which were 3 marine modified Packard 3A-2500 V-12 liquid cooled, gasoline-fueled aircraft engines with around 1200hp-1850hp each. They used 100 octane av-gas and burned through 200 US gallons per hour at a cruising speed of 23 knots/26 mph. The sucked up 500 US gallons per hour at top speed of about 45-50 knots/51-57 mph. That’s a lotta fuel. I also found this bit of info, and now I want to visit Louisiana even more.👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻😍🦞.
@Zouave1864 Wow! No respect for the flag anymore😢, and worse, no respect for a relative or close friend that obviously served. People like that need to move to another country, and stay there. Preferably China, North Korea, Iran, Russia, or the like.
@RockyMountainBriar I'm pretty sure it's from his funeral. It has the funeral homes name on the cover. What assholes to throw that out. If they didn't want it, why didn't they have the funeral home just keep it for someone who would want it?
@Zouave1864; That is unbelievable. That should be displayed in a place of honor in one of his descendants home. Total dishonoring of one that served his country. This society of ours has gone to shit.
@Zouave1864 Unless he died a long time ago, that doesn't look like it was from a recent funeral. The bag looks too dirty and the stars on the flag aren't as bright as they are on a new flag.
@PappyJoe I think he passed 2 or 3 months ago. The house is for sale now. It was in the trash with all sorts of other garbage. The bag was pretty dirty from all the crap that was tossed on it, i did have to wipe it off. The flag is actually quite clean. Who knows, could have been for another family member? It does have a paper in the bag that says it was provided by the V.A. Regardless, the trash can is no place for a flag. Certainly not the place for the flag of a fallen veteran.
@motie2 There seem to be some bad birth dates, or bad math involved in that post, or a typo? Both Jagger and Richards born in ‘43’, one turned 80, the other 79 in 2023? There is something fishy in those numbers.
Being Diabetic, I praise God that smoking me pipe doesn't raise my glucose level. Everything in the picture above does, so I don't partake. My general approach to controlling my blood sugar is...If it tastes good, I don't eat it.

I like it.

Only 4 more days until the work is completed.

Holy Shit, Brother. Hard to find an upside. I'll burn a bowl or two for you, but I know that won't help either.

I agree 100% with you.
The upside-down flag
All Mrs. Alito’s fault
She should be impeached!
The upside-down flag,
Sam Alito blames his wife,
What a Prince he is!
That is unbelievable. That should be displayed in a place of honor in one of his descendants home. Total dishonoring of one that served his country. This society of ours has gone to shit.

Absolutely.
There must be a sad story behind why that flag wound up in the trash.
Despicable

Agreed.
Yep, Now I need Bourbon Oreo’s……and I’m not a big fan of Oreo’s.
