@Oddjob27 Save your money and buy the Missouri Meerschaum cobbit pipes instead. I was gifted one, and while it looks nice, it's more of a mantle pipe than one you would want to smoke.
@Oddjob27 - I am going to disagree with @thebadgerpiper on this one. I have two different Cobbit churchwardens from Missouri Meerschaum and both of them are good smokers. Sure, the smoke doesn't last for an hour as it does in one of my briar churchwardens, but if you're looking for a good 30 to 45 minute smoke, you can't go wrong with one.
From another standpoint, I've been a LOTR fan since the 70s. In my opinion, the Hobbits would have been more likely to smoke a corncob pipe because they are portrayed as an agrarian society. Wizards and elves on the other hand, would smoke meerschaums. I think the humans and dwarves would be the ones smoking briar. Or maybe the dwarves would smoke pipes carved from some other lightweight stone.
@PappyJoe Love the theory on the LOTR pipes! I think there was a little bit of confusion, @thebadgerpiper and I was referring to the MacQueen's LOTR pipes. I've decided not to get the MacQueens, but I was very fortunate to have recieved the wizard and elf bowls of the cobbit in a smokable seconds bag i purchased a few years ago just don't have the churchwarden stem.
@PappyJoe I should've been a bit clearer in my post, but I was referring to the MacQueen LOTR pipes. I love the Missouri Meerschaum cobbit pipes, and I own the Shire. The MacQueen pipes, on the other hand, are not great pipes.
I think you're onto something about what pipes the LOTR races would smoke. Hobbits are definitely the cob types, maybe dwarves, too. Can't see elves smoking a cob, though.
Yep. I missed the part where you guys were talking about MacQueen LOTR pipes. About 7 years ago I bought one of those for one of my sons and was immediately unimpressed by it. My son was, also. We decided that while they are interesting to look at, the choice of wood he uses to carve the pipe from is not optimal and they get very hot.
I have been more impressed with the looks of some of the meerschaum LOTR pipes though and if I was going to buy a new one to smoke, I would go with a meerschaum.
The Pipe Staff of Gandalf the Grey is a replica of the original staff in The Lord of the Rings films, crafted to exacting detail. It includes a full scale, non-functional replica of Gandalf's Pipe, complete with Tamper & leather Tobacco Pouch.

Oddly enough, the book published by the Weta art department (the guys who helped make the films) depicts dwarf pipes in detail. A couple of guys on the web have made wooden pipes to match the artist's drawings.
I have seen wooden pipes made by MacQueen, I think, that would work in that staff. I bought one of my sons a MacQueen LOTR pipe - the Dwarf one - and he has smoked it but its not his favorite.
There is a part in "the return of the king" where Bilbo gives pippen and merry pipes made by the elves as gifts. It says they are made with pearl mouth pieces, and silver accents. I would love to see a pipe maker explore something like this.
“ Bilbo laughed, and he produced out of his pocket two beautiful pipes with pearl mouth-pieces and bound with fine-wrought silver. 'Think of me when you smoke them!' he said. 'The Elves made them for me, but I don't smoke now.' “

I love your analysis of what races smoked what kind of pipe.

It must not be politically correct to include a functioning pipe?
Exactly. That's why I think Dwarves would smoke pipes carved from Morta or stone.
