Fantasy must reads. There are others, but theses are the top three, in no particular order.
Lord of the Rings - Tolkien (All 3 vols.) Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, the Unbeliever - Donaldson (10 vols.; only the first three are essential) Kingkiller Chronicle - Rothfuss (Only vols. 1 and 2 published so far; Vol. 1 is astonishing)
Of course that's just my opinion; I could be wrong. But SWMBO agrees and she is never wrong. And she doesn't have my password, so she can't get in here. <giggle>
@motie2 - No. And let me clarify something. I read all three of the First Chronicles and all three of the Second Chronicles. Read the Runes of the Earth (1st book third Chronicles) and lost interest.
I've read 'em all. Didn't buy 'em. SWMBO is the fantasy fan. I'm SF. But I read certain of her stuff. For Donaldson. it's mostly the first Covenant trilogy and Mirror of Her Dreams.
I've read the Hobbit and TLOTR, I also like the lighter ones like Alan Dean Foster's "Spellsinger" series and L Sprague DeCamp's fantasies and Fritz Leiber's "Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser" books. There have been countless others as I've been a F and SF fan since I was in my teens.
@motie2 If you haven't already, you need to read The Silmarillion. Heavy reading, but fills in the pre-trilogy history. Actually helps to understand the trilogy much deeper... I must confess I had to take notes along the way or I would have been lost...
"A couple of years ago, I pulled out all four books and would sit under the tree and read them while smoking Capstan Blue. " @PappyJoe - I like this idea. I have been thinking that it is time to revisit them, and smoking Capstan Blue would make a nice complement to them.
