Coffee and Pipes

  • A little gem is Timothy's Columbian La Vereda (not the Columbian Excelencia).

There's really no other coffee just like it. It's different and somewhat unique.
  • I just love coffee. Today is a special blend of two different local roasts. One is smoky and the other is nutty. Combined is just amazing. The house smells like an Italian coffeehouse. Don't have a pipe lit though. Maybe later but for sure this weekend.

  • Scrapings from the hard drive.
  • Columbian Arabica beans, fresh ground, shared with my wife and the a quiet smoke on the porch.
  • I'm new to the enjoyment of pipes but what i enjoy is Dunkin Donuts coffee and molto dolce.  Seems to go good together.  Haven't tried many other flavors yet but i will.
  • @BlueCollarBastard,  Dunkin Donuts coffee is great I do agree. But I first choose my local roast, it's so awesome to get fresh local stuff.

    Drink on you Dunkin Bastard!

  • My problem is the volume. I have a 20 ounce cup which I will fill 2 times in the morning prior to eating anything and while checking this site. I prefer a hardy "dark roast" or an "espresso blend". After my morning coffee I seldom will drink more during the day. I used to drink only "decaf dark roast", but I am now a regular kind of guy.

We have a convenience "type" store chain called Wawa Markets, sort of like 7-11, Cumberland Farms, etc. I think they have the best coffees around. We buy 2 sacks at a time and put them up in  cam lock jar that MIGHT last almost a month or so. GREAT stuff.
  • @BlueCollarBastard

Oh to be there again......you have such a great adventure ahead of you for sure. "New to the enjoyment" is a wonderful place to be. You have so much fun ahead of you. Sometimes when the mailman comes it is like Christmas morning was when you were a little kid. Handling, cleaning, and certainly smoking your pipes is like playing with your favorite childhood toys. Should you truly develop a "passion" for it, you will be a happy man.

I think our cigars, pipes and tobaccos fill that void that was once occupied by our Tonka Trucks, racecars, skates, etc. Most of us men are certainly uncomplicated and somewhat simple creatures at times. Give us something shiny and simple and we will sit smiling and mesmerized for hours on end. It gives some of us a short while to ruminate on simpler more basic issues. When I smoke I relax and think of things that when in a more less contemplative state might never have been pondered, let alone deeply studied.

So enjoy your adventure and welcome aboard.
  • @pwkarch Thanks!  Yea I was excited when my Molto Dolce arrived. ran to the mailbox in shorts. Let me remind you it was 30 something degrees. With my bootlaces untied!
  • Ready to try the Barbados Plantation that @motie2 mentioned. Also want to try the Plum Pudding. Has anyone tried that?
  • @BlueCollarBastard

Moties Barbados Plantation is a very nice blend......I have some Plum Pudding somewhere here that has yet to be opened.
  • Decided to "fancy up" my McCafe coffee this morning. Added a teaspoon of cocoa, a touch of hazelnut syrup, all in my USMC mug. Add an Oom Paul sitter loaded with Virginia Gold Vanilla and it made for a wonderful morning...
  • I do enjoy coffee, I have found that it is best when I grind it fresh. As for blends there is a local roaster by local I mean 1hr 45min from the house called jumping goat who carries a wide assortment of whole beans and ground coffee so I tend to pick up about 4 to 5 bags of beans every time I make the trip. Ethiopian and there espresso bean are among my favorites.
  • I have a friend in Greece that visits many different Cafes where there are literally thousands of in Greece. Traditionally coffee is served with a form of baked good and a glass of water on a tray. He photographs the pipe he is smoking at the time and this is his result.

  • He sends one of these, all different, about 4 to 5 a week.
  • @Woodsman, nice pictures. Does he tell you what blends he likes with what coffee? I'd love to get a list of blends that compliment smoking a pipe.
  • @Londy3 He says what tobacco and Pipe he's using. The coffee is whatever the Cafe supplies, in their preparation it's all in the process not the blend. Over half his pipes are customized or refurbed by him and often he accompanies his work with step by step photos on his blog.
  • I've recently gotten into the bad habit of drinking my coffee from disposable paper cups with a plastic lid, especially made for hot liquids. My wife has been buying the from the Dollar Store for road trips, but I use them on a daily basis for my coffee and tea because it seems to keep in the heat, making a hot cup of coffee last a lot longer. I know it's bad for the environment, so to cut down on the waste I'll use the cup for several days. But as a pipe smoker I tend to wander around the yard or garage with my coffee in my hand so I find the paper cup to be a lot more convenient than lugging around a nice ceramic mug.
  • Frog Morton and a dark roast (usually Starbucks Sumatra Blend) are at the top of my list. I don't have a morning routine for smoking my pipe, although I'd like to establish one. Personally, I only ever drink coffee, tea, or water while smoking and am of the opinion that most coffee goes great with most blends.
  • @ghostsofpompeii when I'm out and about, my coffee/tea is always  in a container with a top. With my shaky hands it's the only way for me to stay dry, unscalded and not stained. At home I usually have a heavy mug 2/3rds full.
  • @ghostsofpompeii

This may sound really weird, but after so many years of stopping very early AM for coffee at a convenience store, I was buying boxes of 20 ounce cups so I could drink my coffee at home from cardboard.....it just feels right.
  • Coffee & Tobacco: 3 Blends To Pair w/Your Morning Cup by Daniel Bumgardner

I'm not sure what Mondays would be without coffee. Likely a sleepy haze of indiscernible communication and thoughtless activity, I'd wager. Thankfully, caffeine exists, as do some pretty neat and flavorful ways to imbibe it, many of which pair phenomenally with a number of our favorite tobaccos. A little over a year ago, Social Media Liaison Adam O' Neill posted a very informative article on the blog outlining a guide for pairing tea and tobacco.  http://tinyurl.com/zr7vzt9

While my tea experience is relatively limited (my most extensive foray having come from a daily Oolong excursion and a one-time witnessing of the traditional Gong Fu ceremony, courtesy of Shane), I do regularly enjoy, like many of us around here and presumably many of you, a strong cup of well-brewed coffee to accompany my morning pipe.

And, like many of you, I have a preferred means of consumption. This time of year, that tends to be four espresso shots of a medium roast blend, pulled over ice and nursed throughout the better part of a morning (the dense, humid South Carolina mornings don't pair well with a hot cup, in my opinion). Unlike my coffee, however, my daily tobacco selection tends to vary depending on my mood, though, admittedly, this time of year considerably narrows the window of what I tend to reach for. So, in celebration of the favorite part of everyone's Monday (what else is there to look forward to?), we thought we'd take a look at three tobaccos which we think pair beautifully with coffee.

    1. Escudo -- I could probably make a list of just Virginia/Perique blends with which to pair with any number of things (coffee, tea, and for the more adventurous: orange soda), but these delicate, finely-spun coins of Virginias from North Carolina and Virginia and Louisiana Perique are my go-to blend in the morning during the summer months. Flavors of hay, dark fruit, toffee, and a subtle hint of chocolate abound.

    2. Solani Aged Burley Flake -- There's a hint of dark fired that comes through in the fresh tin note on this one, but after jarring it and letting it sit for about a week or two, I get the very distinct impression of freshly baked fudge brownies. There's a little hint of cocoa around the middle of the bowl too, along with a graham cracker-like flavor. Who doesn't want brownies for breakfast?

    3. Key Largo -- I just started smoking blends containing Latakia with any regularity this year (it took a hot-weather craving for something a little darker to really entice my palate), but this creamy broken flake of Red Virginias, Turkish, Cyprian Latakia, and a subtle spice of cigar wrapper leaf is gorgeously balanced, with cocoa, notes of leather, and even a dark coffee-like note present throughout the bowl. A perfect all-weather smoke.

  • I bought a porcelain version of a Greek diner paper coffee cup.
  • When I'm driving long distance I have a thermos of coffee and a DD Travel Mug with a straw in it so I can sip it without holding the cup in front of my eyes. Believe it or not, it's illegal to eat or drink while driving in the Peoples Republic of New Jersey. I can't smoke and drink coffee while driving,(Not enough hands.) but I switch activities and usually follow up with coffee immediately after a smoke.
  • @Woodsman - I gave up drinking coffee or anything for that matter when I'm driving in Jersey.  Use to start out with a big cup of black D&D.  Not good when your on the highway, in traffic, and have to go.  Easy to pull over and use a tree but it very difficult to get back on the road.  As I'm gettting older, I find I need to go more often after drinking coffee.  I usually light a Churchill and just drive.  I know that it takes me exactly one Churchill to get from the Commodore Barry bridge to the Cape May.  I usually light it when I leave the Wawa after filling up my tank.  I cannot drive and smoke a pipe.  Need to either re-light or tamp is to distracting.  I save the pipe for when I'm just walking around or sitting somewhere.
  • to my taste buds, costa rican beans pair perfectly with every tobacco ive tried them with.  theyre naturally slightly sweet, medium roast, id go as far to say that they are the virginias of the coffee world!
  • @motie2 Boy, you got my number on that one.
"To pee, or not to pee" is no longer a question...
