Casey Jones Brand

Is the Casey Jones brand just a private label for Pipes & Cigars?

I'm enjoying my first pouch of it, but I haven't seen it anywhere else.

  • @rustedrailpipes I've only seen it advertised in the P&C catalog ... but that because it's the only pipe smoking catalog I receive. I've been tempted to try it myself even though the reviews seem to be somewhat mixed. If you've been smoking for a while now what other OTC blend would you compare it to? Is it similar to the Captain Black blends? I'm not a big fan of cherry blend aromatics because the cherry flavor can sometimes be too artificial - not even comparable to a cherry cough drop. But another P&C blend "Out Of Office" - "Civic Duty' is a cherry blend that's really not too bad, so I can't judge all cherry blends the same. So if you happen to be smoking the Casey Jones "Heroes Blend" which is cherry ... and you think it's a decent blend I might give them both a try. The Casey Jones "Last Ride" blend seems more my style, but the price is right, and might be worth trying them both.

So far (2 pipefull's of the Hero's Blend which is the soft vanilla) I've found it pretty good and comparable to the Prince Albert Soft Vanilla... so its description so far fits vanilla/honey.  Not too sweet.

I have a tin of the Last Ride to try also, that is the Cherry one to try, but I haven't popped it open yet.  I've had bad luck with the cherry stuff in the past, but I'm hoping it is good.  I'll cut it with the Hero's Blend or some extra vanilla if it needs it.

My normal luck is that I find something and it becomes discontinued.
  • I think it is a P&C product,

    .

  • Thanks @Woodsman I noticed it is made by STG, so I was guessing it was a private label.
  • @rustedrailpipes-- I found Casey Jones Hero's Blend to be an all around great smoke.  I first tried a pouch of each but preferred the Hero's Blend to the the Last Ride.  I liked it so much that I bought two cans.  What I found was that I had to dry out the tobacco before I could smoke it.  The Hero's Blend was very moist in the can and was hard to keep lit.  I personally did no care for the Last Ride very much.  It was not impressive at all.  As to a good cherry blend, Middleton's Cherry Blend, which is no longer available, was a great aromatic and flavorful blend.  I have not found anything since that compares to that mixture but that is just my personal opinion.
  • @charles I bought a can of each to hold me for now. I haven't tried too much of the last ride, but I love the Hero's Blend. I might just buy couple of cans of Hero's  from P&C and cellar them.  I found the same issue with the moisture level in them.  If I let them dry out much better.

It's a Scandanavian Tobacco Group brand. I also found it on P&C. I love the Hero's Blend, the vanilla aromatic. It is smooth, easy, and with definite vanilla flavors and room note. It is my go-to for the last smoke of the day, in the evening. Mellow and relaxing for me.
  • @mseddon the hero's blend is my favorite so far, I ended up ordering two more cans from P&C. I figure I might blend in some of the Prince Albert Soft Vanilla with it that I was given as I found that vanilla to be very weak.

Sutliff Vanilla Custard is the best vanilla aro, IMHO.
  • @motie2 I added it to my list to try

@rustedrasilpipes -- You won't regret it. It's a really satisfying smoke, especially if you are a vanilla fan. And sold by the bulk ounce it's remarkably inexpensive. I should also point out that it mixes well with with other tobaccos. Enjoy!
  • I couldn't wait @motie2 so I placed an order for 4oz of the VC.  It should be here before I get back from Mexico later this week.

  • @Motie2 I had my first bowl of the Vanilla Custard (I also ordered the spicy vanilla). I agree with you that it is the best vanilla that I can ever remember.

I think it will blend well with the Casey's as I use it up, but I'll get more VC in the future.

@rustedrailpipes -- I'm trying Pease's Virginia Cream this afternoon. A straight Virginia mixture with a vanilla flavoring. I'll let y'all know my take somewhere here.
  • Personally, I didn't care for Virginia Cream, it smoked way too hot for me, no matter how I packed it or how slow I smoked it.

@pipeman83 -- As I commented in the Review folder, I didn't care for it either, but I did not find it unpleasant. At both P&C and Tobaccoreviews.com opinion seems divided, with the main complaints being "too peppery" and "bitey."
  • I'll stick with the custard one for now. It works fine mixed 50/50 or 60/40 with the Casey.

Vanilla Custard -- Accept no substitutes!!!!
  • What - no love for chocolate blends? For those who enjoy Sutliff Vanilla Custard I'd also highly recommend their Chocolate Mousse. It does for chocolate what Vanilla Custard does for vanilla.

And, let us not forget that both are important ingredients towards @ghostsofpompeii's "Mrs. Hudson's 221B Bakery Blend," the finest aromatic blend I've ever encountered. And yes, when I follow your formula, I do substitute Molto Dolce for the Creme Brulee. But I think I have your blessing on that because you have expressed the opinion that CB and MD are two versions of the same thing; one bulk and the other tinned. [However, I find MD to be sweeter.] I have sent 1 oz. samples and the recipe to friends all over the country, giving your screen name here in TPL full credit. If the want to contact you, they have to join TPL. <grin>
  • The Bakery blend sounds delicious.  I need to find a chocolate someday... ONCE I smoke some of the stuff I've bought so far :)
I remember some really bad chocolate ones when I smoked years ago.

  • @ghostsofpompeii's & @motie2  after letting it set up this weekend I tried my first bowl of "Mrs. Hudson's 221B Bakery Blend,"  this evening.  It smelled wonderful in the jar and it tasted great from the first light.  Best of all, my wife has given me permission to smoke it inside with the AC :)  I'm getting quite a bit of the creme brule (MD) in this bowl.  I'll definitely be adding this to my aro rotation :)

@motie2, so I got a few oz of the Sutliff Vanilla Custard from Cup O'Joes. Oh my socks and shoes! Oh my stars and little sputniks! The tin note is enormous! You could smell it through the shipping bag. Oddly, my wife absolutely hates the tin note. I had to seal it up in a tupperware container. It smokes very nicely though, out here on my balcony. Much stronger vanilla room note than Casey Jones Hero's Blend, though it tastes just slightly sweeter. Very smooth and creamy smoke. Glad to add it to my rotation, even though I suspect that eventually I'm going to have to bury my supply out in the green belt to keep the whole house from smelling like a custard pie factory. Thanks for the suggestion!
  • mseddon  agree on the room note difference.  I think I'm going to mix in the Casey Jones with the VC maybe 1:3 or something like that.

The Sutliff Spicey Vanilla is also really good.
  • @rustyrailpipes Glad you lie the blend. Of all the concoctions I've attempted it's the only one I'd actually recommend. Special thanks to @motie2 for being my press agent.
  • I've been smoking it everyday @ghostsofpompeii

@Charles -- You wrote: <<As to a good cherry blend, Middleton's Cherry Blend, which is no longer available, was a great aromatic and flavorful blend.  I have not found anything since that compares to that mixture but that is just my personal opinion. >>

If you are real lucky, someday you will run into Sutliff Private Stock April Dawn.
"Strong cherry aroma and room note, but smokes mild with no bite."
  • @motie2 -- I will put Sutliff Private Stock April Dawn on my search list.  Sounds really great, am looking forward to trying it.  Thanks, much appreciated!
  • The two most popular cherry blends these days appear to be Cult Blood Red Moon and CAO (?) Cherry Bomb, on sale separately and together in the recent P&C catalog.
  • Red Moon is pretty good.  I'm not a huge cherry fan and I like it.
