What brand of fuel do you use? You appear to have discriminating taste, yet you are not bothered by or do not notice the petro-taste? The taste/smell issue put me off Zippos, Nimrods, and even Beattie. I prefer hemp wick, inside at home, and a Linse elsewhere.
Interesting topic. Looks like most of us on this forum do have facial hair. I do think there is something to it but its hard to determine. Beards are in style right now. I have had a mustache and patch since i was 15 or so. I picked up the pipe again after about 16 years, not sure why. I think i was looking for another form of relaxation. My wife hates the idea so there is that. I mainly do it when im alone outside. :-(
@mote2 That petro-taste comes and goes so fast when lighting up I really don't notice it. I guess I'm expecting it so it comes as no surprise. Then just as soon as it appears it's gone.
I had a mustache for 31 years. Grew it to make me look older. At age 50 I was old enough was getting really gray so I shaved it off and have been clean shaven ever since. My girl friend is REAL glad I shaved it off!!
Had a beard in my teen years and later in my mid twenties. Shaved it off both times when I enlisted in the military. After my second tour, I grew a full mustashe and later trimmed it down to a pencil mustache much like the actor William Powell and have been wearing it ever since which is nearly thirty years now.
I really don't like my beard, but I hate shaving even more. I've tried straight razors, electrics of both reciprocal and rotary blades, the usual safety razors and my dad's Rolls Razor, and I hate them all. SWMBO likes the beard, so that's that.
I grew my beard in 1972 and pretty much kept it until the Coast Guard decided that we needed to look like the other services and ordered us to shave. Some people shaved their beards and anonymously mailed the clippings to Coast Guard headquarters. I wasn't one of them.
About a month after having to shave, I saw the Commandant who ordered us to shave. I had worked for him twice before in my career and had a good relationship with him. He said, "Looking good without that beard, Chief." I responded, "As long as you understand I'm growing it back starting the day I retire." We had a good laugh.
I went on terminal leave two weeks before my official retirement date and had a good beard growing when it became official.
@motie2 - "We didn't ask to be this way; we made a choice." -10 pts. We didn't make the choice. God, Buddha, Mother Nature, genetics, whatever you believe in made us the way we are. We have beards because we are supposed to have beards. It's to separate us from those who can't grow beards.
rustedrailpipes When my stache gets a little wild I use a little moustache wax that I make myself with candle wax( Normal or Bee's Wax) melted and mixed with Petroleum Jelly let it solidify and get it to the consistency where you rub your finger over the top and just get a film of wax on your fingers. apply it to the ends and twirl/shape.
I cut mine off twice a year, for no real reason other than habit. My habit also includes starting a new one the very next day. I don't know why, I am weird and complicated. My wife generally does not like my beard, when I do harvest the whiskers and cut it off my kids and grandkids call me "Goober".
I will however shorten it and trim it up on occasion just to satisfy my wife, usually when it nears my tee shirt neck opening. You know the old saying: "Happy Wife, Happy Life"
Right around this time of the year I stop trimming my beard so clos and being my winter beard. My wife isn't very fond of that look by it sure is warmer on the face when shoveling snow and smoking outside with a north wind blowing in my face. Then as spring approaches I begin looking less shabby.
It's that time of year. Thought I'd bump up this thread. I started growing out my goatee. I can't seem to fill in the sides that well so I'm going to try this and see what happens. I have always had a mustache so want to try a long goatee. Anyone else growing for the winter?
@Londy3 I keep my muttonchops going year round. It used to be a full beard, but I wanted to try something different a few years ago. My chin doesn't mind the cold. My wife hopes I'll grow it back in one day, as she isn't as fond of the look as I am; but for now, it's sticking around.
