What does one mean by over-rated? Does that mean over-rated for the daily pipe smoker or over-rated by the connoisseur (sp?) pipe smoker. There are tobaccos, as there are wines, that are everyday tobaccos smoked throughout the day and others that are "special" tobaccos smoked on a Sunday or before hitting the sack after a long day's work. Tastes change as the day progresses. To me anything fancier than something like Sir Walter Raleigh or Prince Albert for daily smoking is over-rated. But I'm a daily smoker. Or, to put in politically incorrect wine terms, I'm just a "dago red" guy.
Château Lafite Rothschild '83 is clearly not an everyday wine and thankfully I depleted my stores before my Dr. forbade me to have anymore. I do still have some '89 in the cellar though. The difference here is the price between a case of Rothschild and a hogshead of Dago Red is not in the same ballpark. One would have to be very wealthy to make a wine like the '83 Lafite their everyday table wine. Ignoring scarcity for now you can get these different tobaccos for around the same price, there isn't a one hundred fold difference. So, it then comes down to what you like best.
By overrated I believe Mr Dstrib, who originally asked this question, ment what tobaccos have a wonderful reputation that people rave about but you believe taste like shredded tar paper.
