Look what I found!

We went by three antiques and collectibles places today. The first had six old pipes, mostly the old style Bavarian pipes produced for the tourist trade after WWII but I found one to add to my collection. The next shop had over 30 pipes - 10 Dr. Grabow's, a bunch of unmarked imported briars, a LHS Purex, some Kaywoodies, a few meerschaums and 6 Edwards Algerian Briars. I bought a 2 digit Kaywoodie Stembiter that was in good condition.

Here's one I didn't buy. It was labeled as an Irish Bogwood pipe. If you can see the details, it has clovers carved on the bowl.

The third store we went into didn't have any pipes but they were loaded with old tobacco tins. I didn't buy any but here's a couple of them.

And finally, something else I didn't buy. A box of Revelation Pipe Tobacco. It is full but someone had opened it to smell it I guess. It was a crispy as it gets.

Now I'm going to have to check out the stores around here to see what I can fine. The wife will be happy about that, she likes looking and checking those places out

I wonder if that old tobacco could be reconstituted.

@mhajec - it's always easier when the wife is the one grabbing your arm and saying "Look at all the pipes in this case!"

@PappyJoe LOL, I doubt she'll be all about the pipes but I bet she won't notice when I am. The bad thing about that whole situation, is when I buy some, I'll have to walk out of there if an antique mirror and a freaking desk. Or a truck full of other things.

@thebadgerpiper - I am still trying to get some more information about it but with no markings its not going to be easy. I have seen them referred to as "Hunter" pipes but have no clue what that is. I do know I've seen similar pipes with the country of origin labeled as Swiss, German, Belgium and Austria. I will update the information if I find out something new.

@PappyJoe - You have inspired me. I hit three local shops this weekend. No luck. I knew that first haul of a Comoy and a Dunhill would leave me disappointed!

About that bogwood pipe, check out the history of Kapp & Peterson's, I seem to remember that Briar wasn't available during the war and they made some Morta pipes and the illustration looked very similar to your picture with the carved Shamrocks.

This thread inspired me to head over to my local antique store in search of estate pipes and tins. No luck on my first venture, but I have a place in mind that might work better. Might head over there on Friday.

@pappyjoe Wow what a couple of great finds. I have visited some shops around me in the past but the majority of the pipes have been in very poor condition. A couple I have thought about but upon further inspection the bowls had bad burnouts, I guess someone found a relatives old pipes and thought they could get 20 bucks or so. I really love the hunter pipe as well it looks really nice. I can't believe the condition of that Kaywoodie it looks really good.

I went to another local antique mall to try my chances there. Had much better luck, and after finding a neat Chacom, I found this beautiful looking Meer with some coloring on it. I'm debating it, but it's almost $50, and I'd need to send it in somewhere to have a replacement stem made. I'm not sure if I should or not, but thought I'd post the picture on here for others to see.

@thebadgerpiper - Were you able to hold it and look at it real carefully? I would check for any signs of cracks in the bowl and shank. They can be hard to detect so get yourself a small hand held magnifying glass. $50 doesn't sound too bad until you start considering the cost of the replacement stem.

Couldn't make out the bowl design from the photo. What does it look like?

Better to have had and lost... I don't know @thebadgerpipe, I don't have any experience with meerschaum. I'm with @PappyJoe on this one though. Always make an informed decision before buying used anything. 

Anyways, if it is cracked, is it possible it can be repaired @PappyJoe?

I have not heard of anyone repairing a meerschaum but I would guess it is possible.

I haven't bought it yet, but I plan on going there tomorrow and giving it a close eye over. That's exactly the kind of Meer I've been looking for, but I don't want to buy one that can't be repaired. I don't mind having the stem replaced, though.

@thebadgerpiper - I guess I should have clarified myself. When I mentioned not repairing a meerschaum, I wasn't talking about an acrylic or vulcanite stem. I was talking about cracks in the bowl or shank - parts made of meerschaum - or in stems made from meerschaum.

@pappyjoe Ah, I see. I decided I'm going to comission a pipe from one of my favorite indie pipe makers instead of going with the meer. I like the meer, but I've been meaning to have this pipe made for awhile.

PappyJoe: Those tins you saw were the sample tins of Middletons. They would send you a sleeve of 5 or 6 different types for free to try.
