Past few weeks have been a mess, just found out today I have between 50% and 55% blockage in my heart, guess when I go back to Cardiologist I will be talking about options with him?? Results just came back today and have appointment with him next week. Where the heck is my Pipe?!
Once I learned to smoke slow and easy. Sitting out on the porch reading or just thinking with my sound blocking earphones playing my favorites and my pipe in my hand, sipping whatever pleases me is just perfect. We all have our troubles but that setup works fine for me. The porch is enclosed but not heated but that doesn't stop me from my pipe time.
I went from a classic Type A personality when I was working to a laid back slug now that I'm retired. And smoking has helped to bring my usually high blood pressure down to a manageable level. Smoking calms me down, helps me get my thoughts together when I'm about to present my case for not doing the household chore I promised my wife I'd do before she got home, and puts me in a better frame of mind. Whenever I try to explain this to friends who don't smoke a pipe they suggest I'm smoking something other than pipe tobacco. They just don't get it.
Definitely relaxing for me. The job sucks and is extremely stressful most days. After a bad call I can focus on packing my pipe and lighting it. A few puffs in and I'm starting to feel better... Then the radio tones drop again and I'm off to the next crisis.
Thanks for resurrecting this discussion. My favorite way to spend Sunday afternoon is what I call Pipes and People. I simply smoke a bowl while my kids play in the backyard and I call my closest family and friends.
I am smoking my pipes more and more for relaxation,, in fact haven’t smoked a pipe while doing chores at all recently,,,That’s what cigars are for...I can smoke them without paying attention...With pipes, however,,, it is the experience I enjoy,, very relaxing.......though I smoke pipes that most of you look down on,,,,oh, well, I enjoy..
@KenofAhwlby -- Not so, amigo. Any pipe that delivers a good smoke is a good pipe. That includes cobs, no-name/basket, Kaywoodie, Dr. Grabow, even my beloved EA Carey pipes. One theory is that there are pipe smokers (with many or few pipes of varying "quality") and then there are pipe collectors, willing to lay out big bucks for a quality pipe they desire. (I'll lay out 25 to 30 dollars on eBay, including shipping.)
The two best pipe related things I have are a Corona Old Boy and a fantastic EA Carey horn shape. I take neither away from home as they are too precious: both were/are enormously generous gifts from pipe smoking comrades. I'd never afford either one, myself. Presently, 13 out of 14 of my pipes are EA Careys that most folks think have cheap plastic (nylon? Dunno....) mouthpieces, or that they are gimmick pipes.
Smoking my pipes gives me tremendous satisfaction these warming days, as I missed all of 2018 because of my illness.
@KenofAhwlby Like you I quite smoking my pipe when doing chores around the house ... especially when mowing the lawn. I find myself huffing and puffing while pushing the mower - and since I can't take the pipe out of my mouth as often as I like each smoke tends to be a wet one. More goop in the bowl than normally.
@motie2, Carefull......joking,,,,,however My go-to pipes are. “The Pipe’, Venturi, The Smoke, and a Kirsten. Note they are pretty well dammed in the “Pipes from Hell’ thread.
I wish I still had my black apple The Pipe. It went away along with all but three of my pipes (two Careys and a Duncan Hill) when I gave up pipe smoking in late 1984.
@KenofAhwlby Let me reassure you ... my Venturi and 'The Pipe' may get hotter than the other pipes in my collection - but that doesn't keep me from smoking and enjoying them. I try to make it a point of rotating and smoking all the pipes in my collection. Don't want them to get jealous. Plus how can I justify to my wife buying a new pipe when I'm not smoking the pipes I already have.
I had a lime green Venturi bowl that I got in a lot buy of used pipes. I made a new churchwarden stem for it, quite the pipe for St. Patrick’s Day. I have since sold it on EBay.
@RockyMountainBriar, How much did you get for that apple green on EBay? I like it’s looks. @ghostsofpompeii, I don’t know what I do differently, cause I’ve been smoking for 50 years or so, however, my ‘Pipes’, “Venturi’s” are the coolest smoking pipes I have, Especially the ‘Pipe’ with it’s extra thick walls.. Though all my pipes seem to smoke cool......
And a note to all who aren’t happy with their graphite pipes,,,,,please send them to me for ‘ummm, proper disposal..

If you get too many and are overwhelmed, I'd take a nice black apple THE PIPE off your hands.
