I don't have pictures, nor know what they smoked; but the famous cellist Pablo Casals smoked any time he played, except on the concert stage. Somewhere there's a record cover showing him with his pipe. Also, the composer Sir William Walton was a known pipeman.
One of the most popular items on display in the physics section at the Smithsonian Museum is Einstein's pipe! Since it arrived at the Smithsonian more than 30 years ago, Einstein’s pipe hasn't been just a notable personal item from one of history’s great thinkers, it has also the most popular single exhibit in the museum’s modern physics collection, according to museum officials. It’s not really the thing that made Albert Einstein famous, but the pipe may have helped create his world-changing theories and formulas. It surely contributed to his sense of well-being and calm.
@ghostsofpompeii, thanks for posting those. As a kid, I can remember every Saturday night around midnight, one of the 3 channels on our TV featured the old classic horror movies, from the 30's, 40's, and 50's.
Edgar Allan Poe's classic, "The Pit and the Pendulum," featuring Vincent Price was one of my favorites.
Just watched a documentary on Orson Wells and the War Of The Worlds 1938 Radio Broadcast that caused such a panic. Throughout the documentary were photos of a young Orson Wells puffing on his pipe. So I've included several pictures of him below. What I found interesting is from that point on, all the older photos of Wells in his later years he appears to have switched over to a cigar smoker.
Another, like Jerry Garcia. Two talented individuals who abused drugs until they died from them. Sure it's a sickness, but no one told them to stick a needle in their arm in the first place.
I'm a bit irate because a friend's adult son OD'ed on Sunday night. The police saved him with a naloxone nasal spray. So, Monday evening he OD'ed again, and that time succeeded in dying.
That is a very good question, one that I can not answer at this time. I was interested enough to contact the research department of Graceland/Elvis Presley Enterprises to find out. They are currently at work tracking down that information for us. I will keep you apprised.
