I have several impressive tampers that friends have given me.
But the one that I use almost exclusively, is a decent tamper from sassafras. I cut it off the lathe, before I added any finish. Phooey! Might as well use it myself.
@motie2 A Chinese Fangtian ji polearm tamper, cool. It would be even cooler if it had a wooden shaft and sharp blades...you could use it to cut plug tobacco 🙂
I made this tamper last week. I really can't make it much larger. I took it to our CPCC meeting. Since the tamper weighs around two and a half pounds, I did not use it long. It is made out of Osage Orange, a local wood. It is similar to hickory.
@motie2 I might have to make one of those. I’d make a gun carriage for it that could be used for a pipe stand. I was going to make some brass cannons for my model ships anyway, just need to make them bigger🙂 Next decision, field cannon or ship’s cannon type carriage? I think a ship’s cannon carriage would probably be easier to make into a pipe rest, and easier to make in general….no pesky spoked wheels. I could probably make it function as a real black powder cannon too. One round of personal protection, better have a match or something to touch it off though. On second though🤔. That might be a bad idea, black powder can be touched off by a static zap😳
I snagged one of these since I travel a lot for work and am tired of ash getting in my work bag and the pocket of my khakis. It works really well and the pick is great too.
Here’s a pic of it extended. It’s pretty long but the weight of it is perfect for tamping and it hides away nicely when it’s collapsed keeping you free from ash.
Recently, I decided to make a tamper that looks like Thor's Hammer. It is about 10" long. The two hammer heads are about 1 1/2" in diameter. It looks cool. But I found that it was more difficult than I expected. Also, DON'T USE MAHOGANY AND HIGHLY FIGURED WOOD ON A PROTOTYPE!!!!!!!
@motie2 Laguiole knives are my absolute favorite. I have a few of them but they are getting harder to find these days. The end caps are just about big enough to tamp tobacco down in a pinch
@motie2, @Zouave I have been looking at those Laguiole pipe knives for a few years, I just haven’t convinced myself to part with that amount of cash for a knife/tamper. I settled for the Rough Rider “Pipe Doctor”🙂
@RockyMountainBriar I do not have the tamper style ones. Just the regular style ones. I will say that they are absolutely worth the money. The springs in them are solid and tight. There are alot of different Manufacturers so look around before you grab one. It seems the types of steel they use varies. I used to get them from a place called Laguiole Southwest but I can't seem to find them anymore.

Glotov Smoking Cat Electroplated Brass Tamper with Case
I’d bet a drunken cat would be even tougher to herd😬
