Travel Meet Ups

I travel quite a lot for work and I thought it might be fun to create a thread for TPL members to post up where they are traveling to and maybe be able to setup some meet ups.

I'm traveling to Minneapolis this week for a huge gathering for work. Wondering if anyone here is in the area and would like to have a pipe with me. I'm going to be primarily in the Downtown Minneapolis area. Thinking about trying to fit in some pipe shop visits.

Would be awesome try and meet up and have a bowl or two.

Northeastern NJ, 30 minutes or 90 minute from Manhattan, depending on traffic and time of day.

West Union SC, about 15 minutes from Clemson and 45 minutes from Greenville. If anyone is ever in those areas I'd definitely be willing to meet up. Also have a spare bedroom so if you need a place to stay you're more than welcome here.

I'm in Mission Viejo, CA about 30 minutes south of Anaheim/Disneyland, hour north of San Diego.

@Danfriedman I just missed you then! I was in Portland a few weeks ago for work. Bummer, but next time I come up I will post up about it!

I'm in Norman, OK (greater Oklahoma City metro). @Oddjob27, I also travel a lot and hope to use this thread to set up some meetings in the future. Thanks for setting up this thread?

FYI: I know that Brian Levine with Pipes Magazine Radio is really good about meeting with fellow pipers at the McCrainie's Pipe Shop if you're ever in Charlotte, NC. I smoked a bowl with Brian the last time I was in Charlotte. Great guy!! A wealth of knowledge about the industry but still humble and easy to talk to.

Can't imagine what anybody would be doing up this way, but I'm in Greene, Maine. That's the next town up the Androscoggin River from Lewiston. Don't have any reasons for traveling, myself.

@AnantaAndroscoggin that's up there for sure. A lot of us craft beer fans are all agog about Portland breweries which are producing great product. I'll hit you up if i head up your way.

In Portland, a visit/tour of the Allagash brewery is a must for beer lovers.  Better than other breweries I've toured.

I live in upper Illinois, so I'm close to the Chicago and Milwaukee areas. I'm always willing to meet up with fellow pipers, so just let me know if you're ever in the area.

@thebadgerpiper I will be in Chicago in 2024 for sure! I'll be graduating from Concordia University Chicago with my PhD at that time, if all goes as planned that is. Haha!

I live just south of St Louis MO if anybody passing by.  St Louis Pipe Club meets the second Saturday every month and the dooor is always open to new smokers or way world travelers.

jfreedy I am about 50 mins away nice ride on the Harley.  Oddjob27  that would be nice to meet up we might even get KA9FFJ to join us.  He lives on the north east side of St Lou.

If there were more in the alley, my little brother would call it a “clown party”.
”Clown Party”= a few guys dress up as clowns and beat the s#!t out of somebody (usually an asshole of a boss or co-worker).
No, I/we have never actually done this.

@RockyMountainBriar In the Coast Guard, it was called a "Boondocker Party." It never happened at any of the units I was stationed at, so I don't know if it was apocryphal or something from the distant past. Basically, the idea was that a group would throw a blanket over the offending shipmate, and take their boondockers (heavy steel-toed shoes) off and beat the guy with them.

In FULL METAL JACKET it was portrayed as a bar of soap in a sock.

My brother, a US Marine told of the story of the "Blanket Party" as in Full Metal Jacket.  He said it did happen once while he was in boot camp to a "s#!tbird".  It would have been around 1984 or so.  I am not sure if it was in his barracks or if he was involved.

@AnantaAndroscoggin - I can neither confirm nor deny the existence of a "boondocker party" ever happening during my 21-years in the Coast Guard. I may or may not have heard of a young deck ape who refused to take a shower for almost two weeks. Rumor has it some of his buddies in the same berthing area caught him on deck, threw a blanket over his head, tied him to a stanchion, then emptied a couple of boxes of soogie powder over his head and turned the fire hose loose. Supposedly this was on an icebreaker and they were inside the Arctic Circle. Again, this is just a rumor as I was an engineer in those days and spent most of my time below decks.

@PappyJoe I do recall that there was a deckie on my third ship who was given a hint by others in the berthing compartment by them leaving a Buoy Brush (those great-big steel-bristled things for removing barnacles &c.) on his rack while he was out.

Ok PappyJoe......what is "soogie powder"?  Is it a maritime term or a southern term?  As a northern land-lubber I might hazard a guess at some kind of laundry soap or other cleaner of sorts, but it would be a long-shot.
