@Zouave1864 Yes, I tried. The shape does not really trip my trigger, but it did trip my P.P.A.D., just for the fact that it’s a POY. I still would have bought a Smooth Natural, a Rua, or “Nekid” sandblast, but they were all gone within 10 minutes of the drop at SPC. I‘m very picky, and I just didn’t have enough time to sus out a good one…..when I did and thought about pressing the “buy” button on a Rua several times, the pipe would already be gone. I tried 3-4 times then there were no more that had grain that was acceptable to me. The prices were kinda high anyway. I still have the 2023 “Peterson Pipe Notes” (PPN) limited edition pipe pre-ordered. Oh to have unlimited funds……My “win the lottery” plan is not working out. “Who’d a thunk it?”
@RockyMountainBriar I am on the fence with that shape as well. I may spring for a ebony finish one because like you said it's the pipe of the year. I feel like I need @vtgrad2003 to talk me out of it with some good old-fashioned Peterson bashing.
@Zouave1864 LOL Here, I’ll try to help😉…….Peterson’s suck, they are made by cross-eyed Leprechauns with hatchets made of rocks, and drills like corkscrews. To stain the pipe bowls they just drop them in a cast iron pot of bog water (you know, like where they keep their gold) and stir them around a bit. If they want a contrast stain, they stuff them up in their chimneys for awhile, like they do with a traditional shillelagh, before the pot stir swamp water dunk.😬
@Zouave1864 Thanks for the spoiler…I won’t be getting that one. It’s definitely not in my wheelhouse….unless they make it in a 53 Lovat, which I doubt, that might trigger my P.P.A.D. I do like the double beaded silver band though.
@Zouave1864 I’m such a sucker. I thought I could pass on a Christmas Pete, but alas, they did have some 53 shapes. Even worse, I bought an 03, I couldn’t pass up the blast on it, and that double beaded sterling is so classy.
@RockyMountainBriar I am still a sucker. I can't stop looking at the Peterson Junior pipes. I am pretty sure one will show up at my door before too long.
@Zouave1864 I wish they would do more contrast sandblasts. I saw a new POY 2023 in a Rua finish on EBay last week. I don’t recall their original price at SPC, ~$250 ish I think. I tried to find one with a blast that I liked, but they went too quickly, within 5 minutes or so, so I missed out. The one on EBay that someone snagged and sent right to EBay…kinda like scalping…went for almost $600. It had one of the best ring grains I have seen on any pipe. There is another on EBay…or was? I haven’t checked today, it was already over ~$350 last I checked. I like the junior size 53, but I just do not like the rusticated finish, especially since it is not nekid briar.🙁
Mail Call today. I found a Peterson Christmas 2023 #53 Lovat with a decent blast. I wish this one would have “popped” on “drop day”, I would not have bought the #03. Oh well, it has a nice blast and the #03 shape is another favorite of mine. My P.P.A.D. went crazy, SPC also had a Terracotta Junior Lovat that I had to buy. I wasn’t up for one of the rusticated ones. I was pipe curious about the Juniors though. I wasn’t sure if they were all that small, somewhat hard to visualize on screen rather than in hand. Well, let me tell you, it’s small, actually much smaller than I envisioned. I thought it might be similar to the #53’s from ~40+ years ago that were smaller than the current #53, nope….it’s a Junior alright! Cute little bugger, maybe a Dunhill size 2-3?
@RockyMountainBriar I have had an eye on those Jr's. But like you said it's hard to visualize the size on a screen so I haven't had the guts to pull the trigger yet. Is it comparable in size to the Rattrays Goblins?
@Zouave1864 Smaller than a Goblin. Here is a comparison with Goblin, and Rattray’s tamper. Itty Bitty, but it’s been smoking about 30 minutes, I think I will get 45-60 minutes out of it. It is smaller than even I expected, but it’s 👍🏻
