Hurricane Florence!

  • It still seems to be creating havoc with inland flooding issues. I've always like waterfront homes and thought it would be relaxing to sit outside in the evening with a lake or ocean view. But because of the hurricanes and rivers over-running their banks I could never buy a home anywhere near rushing water. A small man made lake might be acceptable - but oceans, rivers and creeks can become uncontrollable beasts. And in most cases there is no way to adequately protect your home from Mother Nature. My heart goes out to all those affected by Florence.

@ghostsofpompeii - my sister and her husband learned that lesson the hard way. About 10 years ago they bought a camp near the Neches river in SE Texas (about 85 miles east of Houston) Since there was a small slough behind the house leading to the river, the camp was built about 17-feet off the ground. Several times over the past 4 years they have been unable to get to the camp with a vehicle and could only get there by boat. Then when the hurricane that flooded the Houston area hit, the flood water went to the roof of their camp. They took a loss but decided to sell the camp last year.

I told them next time to just buy a piece of property on the river and build their camp on a barge with pylons sticking about 45 above the waterline.

Yes, just like the Casino “River Boats” (really barges/docks?) that float in the Mississippi.
  • Do you guys think the hurricane will affect the tobacco crop?  The guys at C&D may be vulnerable...
  • @mfresa Not just the tobacco crop but there were several chicken and pig farms that were destroyed by the floods - including all the animals. So I'm sure that will probably end up affect prices as well. And the cesspools used to contain hog waste water run-off has been consumed by the flood waters meaning all that pig shit is now part of the flood water. When-ever I see people wading in the water I wonder if they have any idea just what's in that water. I can understand people forced to escape - or rescue personnel who go into the water because they have to. But I've seen dumb-ass kids goofing off and riding their bikes through the water. One little cut or scrape and God knows what bacteria or flesh eating disease they might pick up. If you don't need to walk through those contaminated waters stay out. And for all the poor folks who find themselves cleaning up after the flood do everything you can to avoid making direct contact with the water. Especially if you have a cut or open wound. Wear protective clothing or have professionals do the clean-up.

Yes, the sun is out but the flooding continues. Some parts are pretty bad. We got lucky this time. Schools are still shut down and thousands still without power. The floodwater is contaminated for sure and people are not realizing what a public health hazard this is. Some low lives are taking advantage of a bad situation and looting. Losers will be losers. People are crazy.
  • I'm old enough to remember the 1968 Democratic Convention when Chicago Mayor Daily gave police the "Shoot To Kill" order for looters when the protesters were getting out of hand and breaking into stores and looting. Today when I watch the news and there is a protest that gets out of hand and people start breaking windows and looting stores the police are hesitant to even use their batons or rubber bullets for fear of getting in more trouble than the actual looters. In the case of looting during a situation like Florence I think they need to enforce the "Mayor Daily Rule".
  • I'm waiting for the usual bitching and moaning about paying recovery costs from people who don't live in areas affected by Hurricanes. It happened after Katrina. It happened after Sandy. It happened with Harvey. It will happen after Florence.

Florence, like the other ones I mentioned are not storms anyone expects or even predicts in the severity of the damage. I know this is going to sound wrong, but fortunately Florence was not as deadly as it could have been with only 17 lives lost the last I heard.

If there is any program the government should fund, it's hurricane relief - but with tight controls to reduce fraudulent claims. I know from dealing with insurance in the aftermath, the insurance companies are going to fight as hard as they can to prevent paying claims all while proclaiming how much they care in their advertising.
  • Insurance companies are crooks.
  • People who make fraudulent claims to get recovery money from the government are crooks.
  • Insurance is legalized gambling after all -- You're making a bet that something bad is going to happen to you or yours; the insurance company is betting that they will make a profit before you have need to make a claim on the policy.l
