May sound a bit harsh but the only ones that really count are those who participate. I have a Yahoo Horror group with 700 members but there are only a handful that actually post on a regular basis. So that 700 member number may look impressive but if there are only 20 members actually taking the time to post messages and participate in discussions that impressive 700 total doesn't mean squat.
@ghostsofpompeii - that's true of any forum. There are two big ones with probably 10,000 members but less than 50 regular contributors. They also don't delete those who have left the forum or who died, so the number is inflated.
All, I was just curious. It doesn't make any difference to me whether there are 10 or 100 or 1000. I like exchanging ideas with you guys. (Wait till you see the latest pipe project, it is truly bizarre).
I'm mostly a lurker, I read almost every post but seem to seldom have anything substantial to contribute. In any case this is a good group and I'm thankful for the forum.
@mfresa I'm with you. Makes no difference but it is a good question. I am a lot like @Swmaples I probably read 20 to 30 posts for every one comment. I love reading what fellow pipe smokers have to say...
Nice to meet you @Desertdweller My son lives/works in Las Vegas. He says a lot of locals call themselves "desert rats". Wouldn't happen to be in that area would you?...
@KA9FFJ Yes, I am about an hour or so away from there outside of Taos. We get called desert rats out here on the mesa but it is usually more derogatory toward those of us living off the grid.
@Desertdweller Taos is a beautiful place. My son and his wife live in N. Las Vegas, about as far away from the strip as you can get, at the foothills of the mountains. He doesn't smoke at all, but last Christmas he gave me a Mr. Brog pipe and it has turned out to be a pretty good smoker...
Anyway, thanks for the response and good for you concerning "off the grid"...
@Desertdweller be sure to take the time to attend the WCPC Show in Vegas next week. It's my favorite show and the only one stop smoke friendly pipe show left on the calendar.
@Swmaples Never assume you have nothing to contribute just because you may be new to the hobby - or new to the group. We all have something unique to bring to the group because we are all unique in one way or another. You may have an additional hobby that in some ways corresponds with pipe smoking - and then again it may not. But what does music, reading, and movies have to do with pipe smoking, other than the fact that it's something we do 'while' smoking our pipes. And we have several extended threads about music, movies, and reading. Your pipe smoking time might coincide with gardening and growing the largest beef steak tomatoes in the county, sitting in your backyard plunking varmints with a .22 pistol, cataloging your stamp or baseball card collection, or while cross country bicycling. Simple jump into a group discussion with both feet - or start one of your own.
I would add another category, People that post relevant and helpful posts.
Sorry, I am grumpy at the moment. I am part of a Secret Santa on another pipe forum. The thread for that discussion now has 32 PAGES, Much of the comments are on the level of announcing that you just farted.
Sorry guys, to have stirred the pot. I was just curious, as we have a large thread for people to introduce themselves, but only a small number of regular posters. No worries...
