Thanks guys, but I probably will be coming back to this stummel as a rustication project. I try to save each pipe with its originality in mind, but I'm having a problem making a purse out of a sow's ear. @RockyMountainBriar Yeah, this one is real briar, not that pressed wood crap. I inherited one of those among a box of pipes I purchased at an estate sale years ago. All I can say is, those type of pipes should have been outlawed before they were ever produced! I know mine wound up in a landfill not too long after I got it home...😖
@KA9FFJ I had a pressed wood pipe that I got in a lot purchase of pipes. I cleaned it up slightly and put it up on EBay with full disclosure of said pressed wood construction. I don’t remember exactly how much someone bid on it, but it sold like a hot cake going out of style. I think it was like $15-$20 and they paid the shipping🤔. You never know what people are interested in. Personally I wouldn’t have given a plug nickel for it.
If you guys are looking for some real professional pipe repair videos, do a YouTube search for " High end pipe repair and restoration". This guy is FANTASTIC! Been viewing him for a long time and he only gets better and better...
Starting messing around with 2 leather covered pipes from an estate sale. One is a Longchamp, the other is a Kiko. I didn't take any before pics before I started piddling with them, but both rims were charred so badly I didn't even know the Kiko was meer lined. Here are pics after my initial reaming and some rim work...

Mixed 5 parts yellow with 2 parts oxblood.
Then heated the stummel to open the wood...
Yep, looks pretty bland alright. At least it’s not pressed wood of some sort.
I know you will work your magic on the ugly duckling and create a pipe any man would be proud to smoke! Why? Because you are the man!!

Then applied black...
Now on break before tackling the stem...
