About Zippo. I have heard that if you own a Zippo "normal" lighter, you can send it in and they will give you a pipe lighter insert free of charge if you so desire. I have never tried it, basic Zippos are so inexpensive anyway, I just buy another, or cross drill the chimney. About the warranty, I had a new Zippo that, for whatever reason, would not light. It would spark, but not light...no kidding...I could not figure it out. I sent it in and Zippo gave me a new insert that worked perfectly, along with the original (even though it still sparks, but won't light consistently). I mean, it might light once in 50-100 times, really. I still don't understand how it can spark but not light.
I have had leakage from Zippos and BeatieJets, I usually just let them sit for a time until they don't smell strongly of lighter fluid when sniffed closed. I have used the Vaseline method on my Beattie Jet and it did cut down on the usual seepage when reinserting the lighter into the case. It may very well be that I tend to overfill the Zippo, but if that's the case. my whole platoon did it as well.
@motie2 In case the $1400 Beattie on EBay was not "up-to-snuff", there is a $5800 Beattie now:) I really don't think they are THAT special, maybe they added a few extra numerals??
I really like mine, a lot, (it was a gift), but I'm afraid I'll lose it.... and it sucks in the wind. I mainly use a Linse and now the new Vector-like lighter from TPL's goody bag.
I've been bad mouthing extremely rich folks recently, and here's a bit of my motivation:
<<Tiffany Is Selling A Tin Can For $1,000.00 Because The Rich Have Lost Their Damn Minds
Do you have a ton of money to burn on something as insignificant and obscenely decadent as a 4.5 inch "tin can" replica made of sterling silver and vermeil? No? Good.
Look at this dumb can:
Yes, Tiffany — the illustrious and world famous jeweler — really is selling this stupid thing for $1,000.00 You can buy it, Tiffany Blue accent stripe and all, from the company's website.
Anyway, here's a lifestyle shot of this piece of very expensive ___ . >>
@pwkarch-- I agree with your statement 100%! and. the returning of Zippo lighters for repair/replacement is still current. I returned my 15-yr + Zippo pipe lighter for repair just this summer because it just would not spark any more as the flint wheel was worn smooth.
I used that lighter to light my cigars as well as my pipes so it was uses daily for a long while. Within about a week, I received my lighter back with a new insert plus they returned the old insert with a sticker on it that says serviceable. The reason they did not replace the entire lighter was because my lighter is engraved with my name and is sentimental as it was a present from someone very special way back when.
I use that lighter everyday and found it to be the most dependable lighter ever made. I had two others that I carried in the Corps but they were stolen. One was olive drab for when I was in the field and the other was black with the Eagle, Glob & Anchor on it.
My daughter gave me a Zippo pipe lighter for my birthday and I love it. Sure, I have to fill it about once a week. The non-premium fluid can be tasted from time to time, but I just let it burn a bit after I light it and that tends to solve it. When I run out of my regular fluid, I'll buy some of the premium. Mostly I love the sounds it makes opening, sparking, and shutting. Plus it can take the wind (but yes, watch your fingers).
@motie2, ah the humble sanitary can elevated to elite lifestyle choice. I'm not entirely sure if Tiffany is serious or trolling us all a bit. Nonetheless, it gave me a gift idea for all my archaeologist friends. Archaeologists working in advance of construction projects (75% of all US archaeologists work in that field), spend a lot of time documenting FCSs (F*&%-ing can scatters). I think I'll save some of my sanitary cans, clean them up, put some kind of label on them and give them to my friends who are still stuck recording FCSs.
I just managed to score this vintage Beattie Jet Lighter in pristine condition, complete with original box and paperwork. I have been wanting one of these babies for my collection, ever since Neill Roan blogged about them a few years back.
I got that. I am indeed covetous of a pristine looking Beattie Jet Lighter. Back in the day, I continued to use it even after trying those newfangled butane lighters that were becoming wide spread.
I am going to be coveting this one too, because she is staying in the box along with the original paperwork, inside a ziplock bag, inside a Tupperware container, inside another Tupperware container, cradled in another Tupperware container filled with kitty litter.
Down south, the air is wet, and it can wreak havoc on antiques, as well as make your stems difficult to twist back into the shank after a thorough cleaning.
A SMALL dab of "Chapstick" will lubricate the pipe stem just enough to enable assembly. I actually use "Chapstick" on my stems after each post smoke cleaning.....works great.

Of course, I could be wrong.
The Corona with the built-in tamp has been 100% reliable for 2+ years now.

They called it a Nimrod, that's funny right there.

That was the very little known 17th commandment.

A little dab will do you.....
