Added light tan stain, allowed to dry, alcohol wipe, and then time to wax and buff. I then polished the stem. At least it's usable again... here's the final:
I have 2 stummels, probably more, that have cracked shanks. I need to reduce them to where the tape is to have good briar. I think I'll start with the one on the left, since I think I have a stem in mind I can use.
With a gash on the bottom of the bowl, I came up with a solution. Notice the rustication line. I then found my shank point at the outside bottom of the bowl. It's the bottom punch hole. The top one I did was a mistake...
I then placed the inline shank punch hole in the live center and, using the appropriate drill bit in the chuck, I carefully guided the shank onto the bit to extend the mortise BEFORE shortening the shank. That way I already have a "guide hole" for my bit. The punch holes don't matter since I'm planning on rusticating that area anyway...
Long to short: Used brown with a touch of oxblood on the rustication. Then used tan on the top. IMHO, I think it makes for an interesting contrast. Anyway, here's the final:
@RockyMountainBriar How's this? Yesterday the low was 0° with wind chill of -22°! Sunday is forecasted 58 to 60 and sunny, and Monday will be 62° and sunny! Go figure... 🤔 FYI: Monday I'm taking a break from pipe work and playing golf!
@KA9FFJ Similar here, co-workers all say it was around -28F a few days ago. I found out that my outdoor thermometer was broken. I took it to work and fixed it today. Apparently my broken thermometer that said 7F the other day gave me a “placebo effect”, I really didn’t think it was that (-28F) cold.Today it has been above freezing, and is just now starting to dip below 32F. The forecast says low 40’s slowly pushing up, next week pushing 50 degrees. Even better, the lows are forecast to be hovering at or above 32F. All this white frosty stuff should be gone. The recently snow packed and icy streets were already nearly clear when I drove home after work today. Hopefully our cold snap this last week is the last for this season.

Nice, I like that little flare at the base of the stem👍🏻
