I'll enjoy any of my pipes with an iced coffee. They just pair well together for me. Occasionally I'll have a beer if I'm reading. One of these days I'll have to try a pipe with a dram of scotch, but I'd have to buy the scotch first.
@PipeProfessor Haven't had rum on it's own, usually mixed with something else. I don't drink often, as I'm usually the DD when out with friends. I'll have to give those two a look, though!
With a pipe, I'll normally smoke a variety of tobaccos and drink whatever I am in the mood for. Most commonly when I am smoking my pipe I drink water. I never thought about it but that seems strange as every time I smoke a cigar I drink some form of alcoholic beverage.
@PipeProfessor - There are definitely some good sippin' Rum out there and I've never been disappointed in any rum from Barbados. One of my favorite mixing rums is Cockspur 5 Star. For sipping I like the dark rums. Two of my favorites are Pyrat and Zaya.
Single Malt Scotch is good with a pipe but you have to know which region of Scotland your Scotch is from because it makes a difference in the taste. Speyside Scotch (the region not the brand) is more honeyed and less smokey. Islay Scotch has the strongest peat flavor and you can really get the iodine taste. Lowland Scotch is considered lighter and smoother. Highland Scotch is difficult to pin down to a specific profile because the Highland region is broken down into 5 smaller sections like Jura, Orkney and Skye. Campbelltown is another small region that is producing Scotch that is similar in flavor to Islay in my opinion. Picking the right tobacco to go with the different Scotch can be an interesting hobby.
Mostly either Twinnigs English Breakfast tea with a little lemon or an Arnold Palmer in the summer heat.......or sometimes bourbon on the rocks, either Knob Creek or Wild Turkey Rare Breed
Always - cold filtered water. Like many of you, I believe it improves the smoke, the flavor, my palate. So, I rarely smoke without a glass of water nearby. In the AM, I tend to lean toward aromatics and like to enjoy them with hot black coffee. Medium roast. I like to pair my nicotine and caffeine. In the evening, it depends on the smoke. On cold evenings, I still lean toward coffee. With latakia blends, I lean toward the peaty single malts in an Islay scotch (Ardbeg is a family favorite). With my VaPers, I like to pair it with a nice bourbon (I've been particularly fond of 4Roses Single Barrel).
@PappyJoe -- I tried grinding them first, and while it took to the charring light easier, too many grounds were sucked into my mouth through the stem. So whole beans worked better, but took longer to get a good light. <giggle>
