Site Issues or me?

Londy3Londy3 Master
Good afternoon pipers.  I am new to this website but belong a many online forums. This one seems to give me much trouble. Not going to bitch and moan I just want to see if anyone else has these issues as well.
  • Posting does not work with Android or tablets at all.  (when i try to type in a comment, the keyboard pops up then goes away and will not allow me to type).
  • Site is slow to load

I am now on my PC to get this message out as i could not use my phone or tablet.  I am using both Firefox and Chrome and it behaves the same.  Any fixes for this?

It does seem to be running slower than normal, but I was assuming it was my computer or on-line server. So maybe there is a current problem. I don't use a phone or tablet so I can't help you there. I strictly use my PC.

@londy3 I do not think it is you or your devices, that I know of there is not any fix as of yet; the site has been pretty slow lately. Also, there has been an issue for a while with the keyboard popping up and disappearing most of the comments/concerns about it have been posted in the functionality and feedback discussion. I use Android and it happens to me all the time, I have to use my PC to do any posting to discussions. From what I understand they are aware not sure when it will be fixed?

This site is always slow and sadly I check in-frequently. Tonight has been slower than normal.

Site is still slow. Takes about 20-30 seconds for it to post comments. Just took 87 seconds to switch categories.

Just joined today and noticed the site is extremely slow but no keyboard issues with an iPhone.

It's all a matter of perception. I'm 56 years old and I can remember waiting weeks to get a letter from my pen pal. My how the world has changed! If I chould only build a time machine I'd set it for 1937 and be extremely happy!!!

I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon here and side with the "It's definitely slower" crowd.

I've become very spoiled with our internet service.  We cut the TV Cord a few years back and bumped our internet up to 300Mbps.  We now watch all of our television through our Roku Boxes throughout the house.  We've got 4 of em and I use the Roku Stick up here in the mancave.

While I'm up here in the cave I surf the interweb on my laptop via wifi.  I just ran a speedtest (speedtest.net) and am seeing speeds of over 60Mbps.

All of that to say this...  This site is really "crawling" compared to the other forums I'm on over the course of the evening.

Here's to hoping that whoever administrates/moderates this site will forward this up the chain to the powers that be and resolve this excruciatingly slow performance problem.

what about the issue of trying to use a mobile device?  It will not allow you to post a comment.  Keyboard shows up and goes way and keeps doing that.  I dont have that issue on any other forum that I am on.  Others here have the same problem so i know its not me or my device.

    Mr. Watchmaker,
Patience is a virtue our profession demands, but I have a feeling those keeping close track are not using their Riefler Clocks to see how fast their internet is.

This site is the SLOWEST site I've ever been on. I don't have time anymore!

Stop complaining! I like being able to click on a topic, go into the kitchen, get a cup of coffee and then walk back to my desk just as it opens the discussion.

@Philip -- Thank you. I learn something everyday. Today, it's "Riefler clocks."

    The Riefler Clock

Riefler, founded by Clemens Riefler in 1890, produced precision regulator clocks in Munich. His advances in clock design made Riefler Clocks the standard timekeepers in most national institutions and observatories. The clock is housed in a copper tank, which is partially evacuated to about 800 mm of mercury. This stabilizes the atmospheric pressure, which affects the rate of pendulum clocks.

This Riefler, number 394, came from the private observatory of Admiral C. A. Fountaine at Narford Hall, Norfolk, England. It was acquired in 1924 and used until the early 1930s.

Yes Mr. Motie, I discover much everyday as well. When I learned to fix watches a Riefler clock was right next to my bench. I spent a lot of time looking at that clock wondering how much longer until lunch. Probably not what Herr Riefler had in mind.

Mr. Pappy, I assume it isn't instant coffee, it would be cold. You can work on your pogonotrophy in the meantime.

@Philip -- The only Misters in my family were my late father and my two adult sons (Ritchie from Happy Days and Caligula).

I'm just motie. (Ref. "The Mote in God's Eye" by Nevins and Pournelle)

And BTW, the site is slower than I am, and that's saying a lot. I hope Milady Nicole and the other System Lords can effect repairs.

@philip - It's a Keurig. Takes me right at 2 minutes to go from the desk to coffee maker, make a cup and then walk back to my desk.

    Best K-cup varieties IMHO:

    Starbucks Verona
    Starbucks Sumatra
    Timothy's Columbian LaVareda
    Van Houtte Mexican
    Bustelo Espresso

We have a Keurig at the office.

My problem with buyin K cups is that they're too damned expensive for what I like to drink, Dunkin Dunuts, at the office.

I ended pickin up one of the re-usable cups that you can fill with your own grinds.  So, now I buy the bags of DD from the grocery store and brew my own.

Still not as good as from the folks @ DD, so I stop by there once or twice a week on the way to work.

As for Starbucks...  I like their coffee but I don't care for their politics.  So.... I vote with my wallet and buy elsewhere.

Ditto on the DD because friends don't let friends drink Starbucks!

@bonanzadriver - Starbucks always taste like burnt rubber smells to me - acrid and bitter. My opinion has always been that they roast their beans until burnt and then roast them for another two hours hoping the char will fall off the beans. I served in the military for 21 years so I'm sort of an expert on BAD coffee. Starbucks is worse.

As for their politics, you have to remember they are based in Seattle, WA., that fine bastion of far left socialism.

Gently, sirs, gently. Admittedly, Starbucks is what is known in the trades as "Over-roasted coffee." You either love it or think it's burnt tasting. "De gustibus...." I don't like Folgers, A&P, or Yuban. So what? I don't condemn them. They're just not for me. (This does not apply to Mixture 79, that I've excoriated elsewhere). And, with respect, are you not the one who reminds us that what smokes horrible for one of us might be a favorite of another of us?

As to their particular corporate politics, your attitude is certainly warranted, but your decision to vote with your wallet is an individual one. If I started worrying about the corporate policies of every consumer choice I make I'd go mad. One has to pick an choose the little battles, too. Back in the 60's, I had a Jewish friend who drove a VW Beetle. I sarcastically remarked that, ".... it's a fine choice for a vehicle, but Hitler's in the back seat, and the seats are stuffed with human hair." This didn't seem to bother him. The used vehicle was thrifty, reliable, and safe. He stayed with it until he bought a shiny new Bug several years later. Pick and choose.

And shall we condemn an entire city for the politics of many of it's citizens? Did I miss a memo? Are they not within their rights to vote their conscience on matters that concern them. Are "lefty" and "socialist" residents of Seattle "enemies of the American people?" In my world, there is room for both Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders, Sarah Palin and whats-her-name Pelosi (forgive me; I'm 70). Live and let live.

@motie2 - points well made. I would be happy to live in a world of "Live and Let Live" but oft times those to the extreme left adopt the philosophy of "Live and do it our way" which is just a short journey to the right of those who have the philosophy of "Live our way or die." By the way, I lived in and around Seattle from March 1972 until December 1977. Seattle back then was more laid back and tolerant of everyone's beliefs than it is today. Back then people with conservative viewpoints were not ridiculed and called vile names for disagreeing with the liberals. Seattle hasn't gotten better since then.
