My favorite pipe smoking activity is doing the absolute minimum of anything while I relax. I do admit to listening to the radio, and I do admit watching the birds and squirrels empty all my feeders. Occasionally one of our cats dart by on the screen porch and I might grunt to them....or my wife might come out to tell me something after which I get chastised for not answering or commenting. In fact I am probably right on the edge of consciousness at times just "being in the moment".
Lately my favorite pastime while smoking outdoors is killing mosquitoes. Well ... it may not be my favorite pastime ... but it's what I'm doing more than anything else. That and petting the stray cat that adopted us several years ago. She lives in the woods around the house ... and is probably the source of the mosquitoes that swarm around me. I try spraying her with mosquito repellent - but the moment she see the can she takes off. So my best bet is to overspray my hands before going outside, so when I pet her I'm applying the repellent at the same time.
I go on mosquito patrol a day or two after rain to get rid of any standing water I come across. Unfortunately it's been raining way too often the last few weeks. You can get Mosquito Dunks for permanent/ semi-permanent standing water. They release parasites that kill the larvae.
Before retiring, I often rubbed Vicks on my 'stache. It helped me when dealing with folks whose personal hygiene was not something that concerned them.
