My Latest Before and After
I've been eyballin the Savanelli Author 320 KS for some while now.
Last week I found a decent looking one that had a O.B.O. on it.
After a few offers and counter-offers we settled on what I thought was
an acceptable price.
Well, it just arrived in the mail today at the office. Couldn't wait to get home and start cleanin er up.
The first thing I did when I got home was to make my way up to the mancave, get the poboys refurb kit organized and get to work.
I then proceeded to ream the bowl and then filled it up with kosher salt and everclear and let it soak.
Then I went to work on the stem. Fortunately there was no chatter on
it, just dull and a little oxidized. After thoroughly sanitizing it
with isopropyl alcohol I buffed it up with stem polish. Then over to
the buffing wheel for another polish and finished up with a nice coat of
carnuba.
After dinner I came back up, dumped out the salt & everclear and
then gave the stummel a good soaking in isopropyl alcohol and completely
sanitized the bowl and shank until the paper towels and pipe cleaners
were coming out clean.
Then I scrubbed the stummel with the alcohol using a magic eraser.
Before you know it I've got all of the grime off of her and the rim lookin almost new.
I wiped it down good with a paper towel, in and out and then sat it
on a pipe stand to dry out for a bit while my son and I enjoyed a few
bowls and beers together, catching up on the days events.
An hour or so later I got over to the buffing wheels and went to
work, first polishing it up, wiping it down and then putting a nice coat
of carnuba wax.

I'll try to dig up some others this evening when I get home. Seems like I've probably got more afters than befores, as far as pictures go.

After countless hours of sanding the interior of the bowl to achieve uniform thickness and reworking the rim, here's the after...

Spent hours sanding and reshaping the toe of the stummel on this one. The grain is prettier in person than these photo's can show.
After I got the stummel in shape I tried to use the black superglue to form a new button. It was a disaster. So I called up Ric Farrah @ Briarville and sent him the ruined stem along with my refurbed stummel. He sent it back with the new stem and man does it look sharp. (I've since picked up a dozen or so various stems from Vermont Freehand and have shaped and bent them myself, a lot of fun really)
So, here's a couple of afters...

That yacht makes me smile every time i see it.
I too seem to grow more attached to the one's I've spent a lot of time on.
On another site there's a gentleman that collects donated pipes and tobacco and then sends them to our boys in uniform. Most recently he sent several pipes and tins to a Seal Team.
He also sends out pipes and tobacco to folks just getting into the hobby or those that might be of modest means.
Anyway, after talking back and forth with him I thought I'd send him 5 or 6 of my previous restorations. Just some average run of the mill drugstore billiards and such. Embarrassingly enough, I'm sitting here looking at the box, getting ready to send it off this morning, and I've only put 4 pipes in it. But they are all really sweet looking smokers. I just couldn't bring myself to give away more at this time. As I picked up each of the pipes I've refurbed, I just got a smile on my face at how beautiful they've all turned out. To me at least.
It's a good cause, and I'll definitely be sending more pipes his way, but for now I can only part with four of these beauties.
I reached out to him, requesting an email address. As soon as I get it, or other contact info, I'll post it here.
