I've really only used a Czech tool since I started smoking along with a zippo pipe lighter. I feel like it's time for me to graduate. What tool/tamper and lighter should I upgrade to and why?
I really enjoy using my IM Corona pewter, but sometimes I need my directional lighter to reach into some of my deeper bowls.
I have felt the same dilemma with the Czech tool, and would like to upgrade to something of higher quality, however when it comes to form follows function, the Czech tool is really hard to beat, Not only do I like the L shaped foot, I also like it's slim profile when closed.
My preference for walking around is a Pipe Nail, I have them scattered around the house and car, and I use Linse disposable Pipe Lighters also scattered. In my smoking pit I have a Beattie Jet Lighter and my favorite Tamper where they wont get lost. I also have a Czech Tool on my key ring.
I collect pipe tampers and lighters and you should have no problem finding stuff in your budget on eBay. A nice IMCO Pipe Master or Old Boy pipe lighters are a good reliable start. Just beware that most of the time Dupont and Dunhill lighters have to be fitted with a pipe jet ($$) and are commonly counterfeit.
If there are any antique/collectible shops near you, check them out occasionally for lighters. But, as @daveinlax said, beware that some of what you find may be counterfeit or knock-offs. As for the pipe tools, I don't think I've ever seen any of those in antique collectible shops. There is nothing wrong with a good Czech tool. I carry one all the time and keep a spare in my truck. I also have a handful of pipe nails. My two "prized" pipe nails are ones that came with new pipes I bought.
Linse pipelighters. They're like a BIC, but with a sideways aimed flame. Terrific value and they last as long as a BIC. I buy 'em six at a time to bring the price down. Get 'em at:
Czech tools are really all you need, but you can pick up a lovely inlaid handle pipe knife from China for let than $5.00 on eBay. Or, there's an aluminum thingie called a "pipe nail" that's basically just a tamper and costs about a buck.
