Mussorgsky's "Pictures At An Exhibition". But I'd also like the orchestral soundtrack album from the film "Mysterious Island" by composer Bernard Herrmann to be put into consideration. It has all the hallmarks and majestic qualities of a classical composition.

Been listening to several Manheim Steamroller CDs today and think this is one of those orchestral new age bands that might fit into several categories from classical, to rock, and jazz.

Gabriel Faur'e, Opus 48 "Requiem", Vivaldi "Four Seasons", Gustav Holst "The Planets", and I consider Richard Rogers "Victory at Sea" and the Gershwins' "Rhapsody in Blue" to be a classical works even though musicologists may not agree. I like anything by Mozart, Bach, Copland, Dvorak, Albinoni, and ALL the great composers. There is SO MANY great classical compositions that I still hear new stuff all the time. I would recommend anyone wanting to get the best selections along with some background to listen to WNIU out of Illinois, or WRTI out of Philadelphia, both of whom have fantastic playlists. My only regret is I never took a Music Appreciation course in my schooling.

2016 was a good year for music. Beyoncé came out with Lemonade. Rihanna had Anti. Chance The Rapper had Coloring Book. But when it comes to pure volume in CD sales, only one person reigned supreme, and he hasn’t been alive for 200 years: Amadeus Mozart.

A 200-CD boxed set of Mozart’s recordings called Mozart 225: The New Complete Edition sold 6,250 copies in 2016, according to Billboard. Break that down by CD, and the classical artist sold 1.25 million CDs in five weeks from the end of October to December 6 when the numbers came in.

The CDs feature 600 soloists, 60 orchestras, and lasts 240 hours. Oh yeah, there’s also reading material with it. Granted, the total number of people who purchased CDs was no where near the number of downloads and purchases of Rihanna, Beyoncé, or Chance The Rapper. Mozart also didn’t make as much of a cultural splash with the CDs. Pure number though, Mozart reigns supreme.

Still think the older classics like Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Tchaikovsky and the likes are the best although some of the new mixture was good as well.....Metallica on their S&M album was great, the three cello's rock the classic instrument with rock and don't forget Trans Siberian Orchestra.   Also a lot of good classic musicians came out of Russia....

Japanese Synthesizer and Keyboardist Isao Tomita did a series of electronic classical scores in the mid-70s' which might be of interest to both traditional classical fans as well as aficionados of melodic electronic music. His first album "Snowflakes Are Dancing" was subtitled "The Newest Sound Of Debussy". His second album was "Firebird" based on the works of Stravinsky. He then tackled Mussorgsky's "Pictures At An Exhibition". And another classical masterpiece from Tomita was Gustav Holst's "The Planets" released in the US as "The Tomita Planets".

@ghostsofpompeii -- Have you listened to Kitaro? If you like Tomita, you might eat Kitaro off a stick as I have. I actually bought every one of his CD's after hearing just one: SILK ROAD.

@motie2 I had several Kitaro LPs but once I sold off my entire LP collection I never upgraded my Kitaro collection to CD. Absolutely wonderful artist. Got to think about replacing some of those gems on CD.

Bela Bartok was a fine and somewhat unheralded composer whose name is seldom tossed into the mix when discussing the Masters because his avant garde style was experimental classical music, less about melody and more of melancholy and menace. His pieces were dark, atmospheric, and graveyard Gothic with an unsettling eerie dissonance that bordered on spooky. His music is the perfect backdrop when ready a creepy horror thriller from Clive Barker or Stephen King.

I still can't figure out how to post a YouTube video directly to the site so that last post is of the band The Enid which takes progressive or symphonic rock to a whole other level. The group sounds like a full orchestra and choir. The vocal choir you hear in the song is the second keyboardist singing through a vocal effects processor. This is a fantastic band that's been around since the 70s'. Unfortunately the elderly gentleman you see also playing keyboards Robert John Godfrey in failing health with mid-stage Alzheimer's disease. He has been the guiding light and arranger of the band since it's inception.
