While the site has good information on it, I want to highlight especially on the rich history in the Pipes Digest section. Before the internet was as we know it today, there was an email digest sent around (monthly, I think) to the early computer owning pipe smokers. The earliest date I can find in the records is in #004, published on March 11th, 1989, so it's possible the digest started sometime in 1988.
Essentially, the digest issues compile emails sent in to the two members who were running the mailing group at the time. The digest is full of bits of information, stories, and musings on all things pipe tobacco, with some discussion on cigars occasionally. One of the more prolific contributors at the time was Richard Carleton Hacker, author of The Ultimate Pipe Book, and later Pipesmoking: a 21st Century Guide.
Back in the 90's, I stumbled upon the digest on accident and read some of the archives. Though it would be well over a decade before I first smoked a pipe, the stories I read on there stuck with me. Even now on my phone, I keep the archives open and read a digest or two when I'm bored.
If you decide to start reading the digest, you'll have over a decade's worth of material to get through. However, I think if you enjoy reading posts on a pipe forum, you'll enjoy what you find on there,
I recommend visiting Oompaul.com not just to check out Olie's pipes, but also the other sections on his site. For a few years he had his own pipe podcast, until he couldn't keep up with it. I used to listen to Olie's podcasts at work, and he had a great show where he interviewed different pipe makers and blenders.
Olie also has a section on his site devoted to his musings and poetry on pipes. You'll find those links at the bottom of his website, and I can't recommend them enough. Olie has a great sense of humor, which comes out in his writing.

<<Don't Judge A Tobacco By Its Packaging
Thursday, September 21, 2017 by Andrew Wike
I have a strong distrust of any pipe tobacco that comes in a pouch. It's not exactly a fair distrust, more of a mistrust really, having derived from a singular, albeit terrible experience with a particularly soupy tobacco that left me with tongue bite for a week straight. So when Adam O'Neill encouraged (read: forced) me to smoke a specific pouched tobacco a few days ago, you could say I was hesitant. In reality, I was clinging to my chair screaming, "No! No! You can't make me do it!" But he double dog dared me, so I had no choice. I tried it.
As I unsealed the plastic wrappings, I expected to be smacked in the face by a pungent aroma of boozy chocolate or fruits; I found the sweet, bready fragrance of Burley instead. "Hmm... smells nice but I'm still skeptical," I thought. The tobacco was fairly moist, but not goopy or even terribly wet. I could see some lighter Virginias in the mix, and even some darker specks that could've been Perique or dark-fired Kentucky. My confidence growing, I pulled out a couple of pinches and set them to dry on my desk.
After several minutes of glancing back and forth between the pile of tobacco and the foiled packaging, I finally started packing my pipe; the ribbons stacked up well in the bowl, with a nice springiness to the touch once I'd finished. I began the charring light, half expecting to startle some dormant monster hidden within the leaf. No beast came, just the semi-sweet taste of quality Virginias, creamy black Cavendish, and a little smoky spice, along with a very subtle hint of dark chocolate.
I puffed away for a bit, and looked over at Adam, only to see him cutting a smug grin — his arms crossed, one eye brow raised as if to say, "See you big baby, I told you so." And he wasn't wrong. It was good stuff, a solid Burley blend with a good bit of complexity and only a barely discernible top note. It burned well throughout the whole bowl, and all the flavors complemented each other with aplomb. Now, at this point, you're probably curious to know what tobacco our cheeky Australian wanted me to smoke. You've been patient with me so far, so here's the answer: it was Amphora's Original Blend. If you haven't tried it, give it a smoke. If anything, you'll learn that you can't judge a tobacco by its packaging.
