Holiday Inn and White Christmas are great films of the holiday season. I believe that they embody the holiday spirit. Irving Berlin, a pipe smoker, will always be remembered for his great White Christmas.
@AnantaAndroscoggin - Holiday Inn came out in 1942. White Christmas was released in 1954 so they are 12 years apart. The song "White Christmas" was originally written for Holiday Inn and a good part of the plot does take place at a "Connecticut Farm converted to an inn." But the rest of the plot similarities are minor in my opinion.
I don't like Holiday Inn but White Christmas is a must watch movie at least once each holiday season.
Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce are THE quintessential Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson imo. I even love listening to a collection of the old Sherlock Holmes radio shows sponsored by Petri Wine. That little commercial jingle from the 40's gets stuck in your ear! "When you eat or when you dine, remember Petri Wine!" Does anyone else feel the need to reach for their calabash when watching the Rathbone Sherlock Holmes?
In most of the Rathbone/Bruce movies Holmes smokes what looks like a bent Peterson rather than the fabled calabash. We've discussed this fully in another folder.
The two (?) Christopher Lee as Holmes three hour TV movies were fun, too.
I really need to watch more of the Rathbone/Bruce movies. I've only seen one, but I enjoyed it, and Rathbone is an excellent actor.
When I was a teenager, a local Chicago station would play these old black and white Sherlock shows from probably around the 1950's. I wasn't familiar with the stories from the books, but any time they were on, I had to watch. They were great, and had many scenes of pipe smoking. I wish I knew what it was, but I haven't done the digging needed to figure it out. All I remember is the title card had an outline of Sherlock and Watson ala Alfred Hitchcock. Fantastic show.
@motie2. I know, and I believe there’s even an interview with Rathbone on a behind the scenes and he says as much within the radio broadcast collection. I was referring to the iconic Holmes style pipe most associate him with.
While not a lot of pipe smoking scenes, the guy that played Allen Dulles in the movie (Bridge Of Spies) was smoking a pipe as was AD in real life. While not what you would call a movie if you go back and look at the Watergate hearings and Iran Contra hearings you will see a lot of pipe smoking. Fred Thompson and John Poindexter to name a few.
Well most of you know what my favorite pipe smoking movie is, "Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House". I've seen it maybe half a dozen times. Anyway, I finally pulled the trigger and purchased it. Came in the mail today! Check out the pic on the back side of the DVD case in case you're wondering if pipes are featured...
Favorite pipe movie? “Loving Vincent.” In a story depicted in oil painted animation, a young man comes to the last hometown of painter Vincent van Gogh to deliver the troubled artist's final letter and ends up investigating the artist's final days. https://youtu.be/k8xcLdOjX6w
