Dunhill Pipe Tobacco - A message from STG Lane

Hi all:

BAT (owner of the Dunhill brand), has announced that is has decided to 'cease trading' with Dunhill pipe tobacco and cigars. STG Lane is the importer for the pipe tobacco here in the U.S.

Here is what we know: BAT plans to cease trading Dunhill Pipe Tobacco in the U.S. in the next 12-18 months. The decision was the result of an internal BAT business review.

That is ALL we know right now. At the point of this writing, anything else you may read or hear regarding the precise business reasons behind the decision, exact timing, etc., should be considered pure speculation.

As we learn more about the fate of this beloved brand, we will of course keep you informed.

I really hope there is a resolution to this that will allow this iconic name and brand to continue with the same tobaccos we love. This would be a tragedy if Dunhill could not carry on in the same manner. Here is hoping for good future news. It is not yet time to panic but it wouldn't be the worst idea to start buying and storing our favorite Dunhill brands. At least at some level. No need to sale the house.....Yet!

"Internal business review"....in light of FDA regs, perhaps?

Speaking of the regs, does anyone have any additional (more current) info? I guess I'm under the impression that a large number of post-2007 tobaccos will simply cease to be available...at some future point.

This is a job-killer. Does the new POTUS know or care? His boys are cigar smokers. Does the Congress know or care? Who will have standing and bring a suit that can kill all this nonsense?

@NicoleSTGLaneLtd Thank you for the information, I heard/read a couple of different tid-bits about BAT and changes concerning Dunhill tobaccos (halfwheel.com) but wasn't sure what was accurate. I will keep an eye on your article for updates; your post is greatly appreciated.

The vaping industry is pretty active in fighting the FDA regs, but they are positioning themselves away from us "evil tobacco users"

and correct me if I am wrong, but it looks like cigar rights HR 564 does nothing for the pipe smoker?

"Representative Tom Cole of Oklahoma wrote to incoming Vice President Mike Pence this month asking that all FDA deadlines on new tobacco products be delayed by a year as their fate is determined."

There is a lawsuit that has been filed on our behalf, so we will see how that pans out.

We would all do well to contact our senators, congressmen, and the president to express our concerns...a stamped letter is best.

Thank you for the info but this is horrible news!  Dunhill produces many of my favorite blends, guess stock up time is now-I hope MATCH will continue to make their nightcap blend, it is pretty close to the dunhill version and certainly better than nothing

perhaps we can hope BAT sells the rights to our friends at Lane?  They have saved the American burley blends in my opinion, here's hoping they can save our beloved Dunhill tobaccos as well

Thanks so much for the heads up Nicole. I am a big fan of Royal Yacht, and already have a few 5 pack tins cellared, but I certainly need to stock up on a few more. I am appalled at the current state of affairs in the tobacco industry. The chemical laced cigarette has dug us a hole, we are going to play hell digging ourselves out of.

If there is one message I would like to convey to the majority of politicians, it would be that pipe and cigar smokers do not deserve to be included in the same group as cigarette smokers. If the mainstream cigarette had never been laced with chemicals to induce a chemical rush in a short 6 to 8 minute smoke, I have no doubt that we would not be where we are today.

Some say that there is no sense in crying over spilt milk, but I am crying over it just the same.

Ordered 6 tins of Standard and 4 of Flake yesterday. That's a start.  (I will have 10 tins of Standard and 15 of Flake when this order arrives. Not a lot, but certainly enough Flake.)

IMO this probably has more to do with the EU regs than the FDA. I think the Dunhill mixtures would have been grandfatherd free and clear here in the states. If the pipe tobacco and cigars made money for BAT I'm sure these issues could be resolved.

I finally decide to order up some dunhill flake and this happens...hopefully I find it to be an average smoke and won't miss it too much!

@Gordon - I'm holding out hope that some Trump-appointed staffer or bureaucrat will see these FDA regs as something that can be labelled 'job killer', and just wipe them away. Hey...a guy can dream, right? In other news, Trump accuses Obama of wiretapping. LOL...
