According to a well known cigar website and magazine, California voters approved a 153% tax increase on premium cigars on Tuesday. What's not specified is that the tax increase also includes pipe and smokeless tobacco.

 @PappyJoe My local shop tells me it will include pipe tobacco, we will see. I see a lot of red states in this country that look inviting to a young family like mine

So don't buy in California. They want to screw you, you screw them by cutting them out of the loop. Buy online. There are plenty of great suppliers, such as Pipes and Cigars. You can get anything you want and avoid sales tax.

@Rotten I will continue to support my local B&M even with the tax. The taxes on tobacco are already high in Ca. for example, a 1.8oz tin of Dunhill, Sam Gawith, etc. will run me about $18. Basically whatever I can buy tobacco online for I expect to pay twice that in a California B&M. I do almost all my tobacco purchases online, but I drop in once a week and buy a tin and help a local business owner keep her lights on, and I'm only out $20.

@PhilosoPiper I have quite a few friends who have already headed your way. Idaho and Texas seem to be where most working Californians are migrating to.

Don't know what type of work you do @thewanderingdude, but I'm pretty sure you can find the same work in other states that are not socialist and have more reasonable tobacco taxes.

@topaz75 - California will never secede. They can't afford to lose all the federal dollars the rest of us are forced to pay and send their way. That and the Democrats would never win another election without Los Angeles and San Francisco.

@PappyJoe Farming, I work for the biggest organic & conventional farming outfit maybe in the world. I guarantee that everyone on this forum has bought or is buying our produce regularly, no matter where you live. You know those baby carrots? That's us.

@pappyjoe I asked you to cool it with politics and and at least get your facts straight about what where our tax dollars go. There are other pipe boards with back rooms for religion and politics perhaps you would fit in better on one of them.
On a side note TX is well known in the hobby as being a very high tobacco tax state.

@thewanderingdude We eat a lot of the Bolthouse Farms baby carrots, are the as they come from the ground or are they carved from large carrots?

@daveinlax Single, long, slender carrots cut into pieces and rounded off to make baby carrots. I'm with Grimmway/Cal-Organic but Bolthouse is just across town and does the same. I think >80% of the world's carrot supply comes from here in Bakersfield via Grimmway and Bolthouse.

I just found out that my insurance will be implementing a surcharge of $90 per for my tobacco use. There is a way around it but I'll have to attend a six session cessation class that will take three months to complete and achieve a certificate and then the surcharge will be waived. All this BS surrounding quality tobacco products not soaked with God knows what is insane. Just leave me and my tobacco alone. My heart does go out to the Californians who have and are still faithful to quality leaf.

sorry @daveinlax I am not going anywhere and you do not have the authority to tell me to leave. I attributed my information and it is correct. The increase tax was applied to all tobacco products as defined by the state of California. I have a right to my opinions and comments - it's called the 1st Amendment.

Being that CA just voted in Recreational Marijuana use, their Govt. may forget that they passed it. Wait till they tax that.

The Peoples Republik of New Jersey is getting to be just as bad. They just raised the gas tax by 23 cents per gallon. We were the third lowest on Gas and now the 7th highest. The people informed the Carpet Baggers that we did not want it, they delayed it, said they understood and passed it one week later.

In defense of CA they only get back about 90 cents for every dollar they send to the Federal Govt. NJ gets around 80 cents per.
