Saving the stem.

One of the most common disasters to befall new pipe smokers is the breaking of the stem when trying to remove it from the stummel. Here are a couple of tips to save those stems.

1. If your stem is stuck Don't force it. Place your pipe in the freezer for 15 or so minutes. then try your twist, usually the stem will move easily as the stem material will shrink more than the briar.

2. To prevent a tenon from sticking in the future, keep the mortice clean as the damp remnants of tars,etc.. will harden in time.

3. After cleaning rub the tenon sides with a piece of unscented candle wax which will prevent the hardening tars from gripping the tenon.(The candle wax will not flavor the tobacco as it is not in the airway.)

Tobacconist at Iwan Ries showed me a cool old trick.  If you have a pipe with a tight stem, draw all over the stem with a pencil, the graphite will greatly improve it.   I have done this on many pipes since, and it works great for me
