Have you had this happen?

I opened this tin a couple of months ago and opened it today to find this? None of the other tins with were like this. I usually store opened tobacco in jars and just had not gotten to this one yet.

@hloakes Oh brother! I haven't had that. I do like you said normally once I open the tin I transfer the tobacco to a mason jar.

That's definitely don't look smokeable. I've heard of tobacco growing mold, but usually the problem in the rectangle tins is the tobacco getting drier than dust.

My understanding is that if you buy a sealed tin with the pull top aging it is fine. But if you have tobacco in a coin or rectangular vacuum sealed tin you should transfer to a jar. A member of our pipe club lost 20 tins of escudo the same way as you lost your tobacco.

I have heard Samuel Gawith tobacco can run a little moist. Mold requires Food(in this case your Tobacco) Moisture, Warmth and Oxygen to grow. I personally would pass on smoking it. If it was cheese I would cut that piece off and keep eating.

Just read up on mold vs. plume. That definitely looks like mold.

Ack, I'd definitely pass on smoking that. You definitely don't want to smoke moldy baccy. My sympathies.
