Today, inspired by a “rustic” DIY pipe that was posted awhile back, I decided to drill out a chamber and mortise in a piece of the Plum-wood from my moms tree that we cut down a few years ago. I just did a quickie freehand drill so I missed bowl center left/right a smidge....oh well, I got the height right, which I think is more important. I have not decided if I am going to use this big vulcanite saddle bit stem from my scrap box, or make another from some aspen or green ash? I kinda like the look of the vulcanite. I wish I would have thought about using it before I drilled the mortise, the tenon is too small🙁. I will just have to cut the original off and make a new one from Delrin if I decide to use it. Delrin is stronger and slicker anyway. The other issue are the cracks in the sides of the chamber, which were there when I started. I did not have a nice solid piece of wood in my scrap pile. I think I will use some pipe mud to fill them before the first smoke and see how it goes, it should be fine. I have already slightly pre-carboned/charred the chamber with a butane cigar torch. By the way, this has nearly an @pipeman83 sized chamber. 1” diameter x 1 7/8” depth, big pipe....not going to be a clencher. Felix was doing an initial inspection.
I was able to use the stem as-is. I fit the tenon of the original stem by lining the mortise with a bit of cyanoacrylic, removing some of the knot to fit the stem/tenon deeper, and heating the tenon to expand it a bit👍🏻 I also set the bark on the edges top and bottom with cyanoacrylic, to keep it from flaking off. Smoking some Drew Estates “Grand Central” after filling the chamber cracks with pipe mud and lightly lining the chamber with it as well. I am picking up a bit of harsh (plum resin/sap?) in the smoke...not surprising since when I cut the branch with the bandsaw it still had some sap, even after a couple of years drying time. Hopefully that will diminish after a nice cake builds up? On the bright side, and completely by accident it actually fits the hand very well. Definitely not a clencher.
@Corey562 Nice bevy of pipes. The spiral cuts in the ebonite swirl stems brought out some cool patterns. I especially like the side view of the tan/black pattern with the little "spots" in the bottom of the spirals. The other green?/orange has them too, just not as defined, more like "x's" on that one.
