Cutting Plug Tobacco

I like to cut plug tobacco with my pocket knife, but when I am away from home, I haven't figured out how to do it without a cutting surface (which I don't normally carry around). I like plugs partly because they are so portable; anybody know a good cutting surface that is equally portable or a good way to cut the plug (especially a 'loose' plug) without chopping off a finger?

Any tricks, tips, or suggestions?

I've never played with plug tobacco but if your looking for something portable I'd recommend a thick piece of suede leather as it would protect almost any surface, unless your knife is razor sharp.  Otherwise a small piece of wood like from an old clipboard.  Something just big enough you can cut the plug but not a monster cutting board.

Not my preferred solution, but in a pinch I've had some luck using a cigar cutter to sort of snip away at the plug to "shave off" the tobacco rather than cutting off a clean slice.

I've used an inexpensive notepad turned cardboard back up to slice Ropes into Medallions.

I cut a small piece of 1/8" oak 4"X4". It works great. Can really take it anywhere.
