You can read all about cuts, flavors and so on but I have found the best way to learn about stuff is either trial and error or asking someone with experience! So guys and gals, put your input in here....why do you like the cut you do and how does it effect the burn, flavor and so on??
All of them! Add to this list, crumble cake, plug, roll (pigtail), and shag. Each is different, has its own pros and cons, and by smoking all the different cuts you can get your hands on you may find one that you love.
Maybe because your terminology is confusing. Terms like "short cut" and "long cut" are not used in the industry. Tobacconists talk about ribbon cuts, or cube cuts, or flake, or broken flake, or crumble cake, or coins, or shag. Trying to declare which one is "best" is totally subjective. Probably not the first consideration, for most folks, when choosing a blend.
Trying to term it for new people, this post was to help them grow but yes long and short are not used yet sometimes loose cut is sometimes called a long cut by some people. People should know more about these cuts and why they are out there and what the difference is. This site gives a little description but it doesn't go into much detail and doesn't talk about the taste differences.
Even for newcomers, I think it is important to use proper terminology - that's how you learn. A big difference is how they burn - shag burns quickly, and cube cut pretty slowly.
Other problem is a lot of shops you go into are not avid pipe people, they are just there to make a buck so they don't always know the terms. Yes it would be nice if everyone spoke on language and used one term but they don't, the good thing about this is we can teach them what they hear is not right and teach them the right terms yet allow them to be able to communicate with their local shops on there level as well.
